Is Swiss Moving Company cheaper?

We started getting offers for our move around July from Germany (Düsseldorf) to either Stans / Meggen and I have to say, what many people know already, German Moving Companies are well overpriced.

We are a Family of 4, living on a 4th Floor with big Elevator, destination Flat is yet unknown. We will pack alone, just asked for 2 Ikea Closets and 1 Kid high bed to be uninstalled and reinstalled.

We had already 10 offers, ranging from 3000 - 7000 EUR, no idea how can this funny range could actually be....

So we were advised to check also Swiss Companies, some people moved to the Netherlands for example found it cheaper to hire a Company from the destination Country.

Anybody got experience with that ? Any other recommendations from DE to CH ?

Thanks for any tip !

Re: Is Swiss Moving Company cheaper?

Swiss moving companies are unlikely to be less expensive than German firms as the hourly wages here are higher than in Germany.

I think you are still better off with a DE moving firm from your location.

10 offers is a lot of offers. Were they all done with an onsite visit? The price range does seem strange.

Going to be cheaper to just buy 2 brand new Ikea closets and kid bed here, even paying the full swiss price

Re: Is Swiss Moving Company cheaper?

I can recommend the company we used in Baden Baden. It's half way and a trio to DUS shouldn't be a problem. Just make 100% sure u don't underestimate the load. We rather overestimated the m3 and had half a truck empty as it's still cheaper then paying overload fee.

The helpers are polish and dismantle /setup any IKEA product in minutes.
Good truck loading and fixing. No damage at all
As they go with the small trucks they don't have to queue at the border for goods declaration and can pass by to the car parking.
The drivers are sub sub subcontractor and don't speak German

With express international. Baden Baden

They actually live in the car for a month. Do European wide relocation and once a month drive back to the family

All paperwork needed you will get from with express in Baden Baden.

Re: Is Swiss Moving Company cheaper?

Read the contracts and compare - that will give you a feeling for why the price is different. Stay away if they are not indicating a break down.

Should have an estimate cubic meter, dismantle and assemble service, elevator insurance etc.

You could ask one Swiss company for comparison.

Also beware - moving companies are notorious for doing lowball estimates to get the job and then the price doubles as it's "only an estimate".

We had the latest company factor in handyman costs for disassembly but not assembly for example.

Ialso ask who is doing the job on Swiss side. Typically only the driver will come over and then a local crew will handle.

It is a severely subcontracted business and many times the people doing it are not experts at all!

Re: Is Swiss Moving Company cheaper?

We moved across the country several months ago, although not the same as from Germany, but still not a local one day move.

We had 5 quotes, the highest 17,0000, the lowest 5,000. None were online quotes, each firm visited and did a survey.
I always obtained 3 quotes for clients and I would have stopped at 3 had the prices not been all over the place.

If you want a quote from a Swiss firm, take the details from one of your quotes which you think is most accurate in terms of volume. As you don't know the destination access and situation this makes an accurate estimate impossible.

I have worked with many moving firms, a few stand out as more than competent, others less so.

I agree with the other poster, Ikea wardrobes which must be taken apart and built again are not worth moving.

Re: Is Swiss Moving Company cheaper?

So how many cubic meters is this, and how many large piece of furniture except the Ikea stuff?

3000 does not seem expensive, provided you make sure they accurately assessed it. I paid 1800 EUR (I think) for moving my single household from Germany to Zurich in 2007 (similar distance), and then 11000 CHF in 2018 for 4-person household from Copenhagen to Switzerland. The latter was around 50m3, one 10 ton truck plus a van. Swiss company with Czech subcontractor.

Switzerland is not cheap. If you are worried about a relatively small differences in moving expenses your are going to get permanent shock after you arrive.

The first six months everyone needs a sling for their arm, as it is dislocated reaching for their wallets.
