Tips on how to apply for a sought-after apartment

Hello all

My boyfriend and me are looking to move in together and have eyed a place that we would sign for on the spot. The problem is we'd be in good company with probably 50 others ;p

Does anyone have any advice on what made their application particularly successful?

Many thanks!

Having good references, being able to demonstrate that you can afford the place, and will pay your bills on time.

Re: Tips on how to apply for a sought-after apartment

If the current tenants are looking for a Nachmieter then submit the application direct to the landlord, instead of sending it through the current tenants: they may have given a deadline to the people viewing, and wait for this before sending all the applications to the landlord, so you can be ahead of the curve for the landlord to see it. This is what happened when I advertised my apartment: someone came and saw it, emailed the application immediately after and then called the landlord and it was gone before the end of the day.

Re: Tips on how to apply for a sought-after apartment

Prepare your bundle of documents well in advance. Some agencies or landlords require that applications be made online. if that's the case, don't hesitate. For the others,
  • when you enter the apartment try to get an application form, immediately. If they are there in paper form, there are not always enough;
  • always have a full set of copies of your documents with you when you go to the viewing, just in case the person showing the flat is an a representative of the agency/landlord, and might receive your documents right then and there.

Try to engage the person showing the apartment in brief conversation, and tell them your name (no just first name, use your surname as well) and try to make a good impression. Don't complain about anything, also not the fact that you've unsuccessfully applied to 30 flats already, and especially nothing negative about life in Switzerland. Say, specifically, what you would find good about living there.

If you do not already speak the formal language of your canton, (in Zurich High German will do), then practice, practice, practice. That can be a big plus when applying for a flat. If you do speak it, write this in your application. A command of the local language bodes well for peaceful neighbourliness.

Indeed. This is possibly more important than an award winning cover letter and an application which is flawless.

One overlooked option, if there is a Hauswart go and introduce yourselves. Also see if you know any of the tenants.
