Re: Found great apartment BUT near a church...

Relagu- wrap up warm, take a blanket- and go and sleep in front of the buidling with windows open, and see- or rather listen.

In the small Market Town where we have our flat in UK, many newcomers have written to the Church and Council about the bells. The response has always been clear and definite 'the bells have been here for centuries- if you don't like it, go elsewhere' or words to that effect. Simple.

I understand ringing at the full hour but everything in between is needless.

Re: Found great apartment BUT near a church...

I used to live on the top floor, about 15 metres from a (relatively small) bell that would chime every 15min. It never bothered me but it took my girlfriend, who's a light sleeper, about 6 months to get used to it. I'm undecided if it was worth it for the cheap rent.

I found a great house. That later ended up under a flight path for Euroairport. You really do get used to the noise.

Re: Found great apartment BUT near a church...

We didn't realize when we got our first Zürich apartment that it was a block from a church, not that we had so many options. You really do get used to it and honestly don't notice it much except for the longer chimes signaling church services. They stop between 11 PM and 6 AM, but I'm usually in bed before that and they don't wake me.

I've actually learned to rely on them as I'm getting ready for work, and one week they broke and I was late every day for my train!

Re: Found great apartment BUT near a church...

I would not move to a place so close to a church. Double glaze windows won´t be much help. I have triple glazing and can still hear the bells from a church about 200 meters away. Thankfully they don´t ring so often around here.

You could try staying in a hotel or air bnb nearby to see how often they ring.
