limmatstrasse safe or not?

Hi
Iím flat searching and saw a good flat near Limmatstrasse 30

Some people tell me itís not so close to Langstrasse so itís safe,
but some people are scaring me saying that there are a bunch of drunk and high people. So Iím not really sure what to think.

Opinions please?

Re: limmatstrasse safe or not?

It is all relative. Safe compared to which place?
On a global scale, it is very very safe.

Re: limmatstrasse safe or not?

Langstrasse is the most dangerous street in Switzerland. But it's safer than the Yorkshire village I'm staying at today.

Re: limmatstrasse safe or not?

The part of Langstrasse that has a bad reputation is the Kreis 4 side which is between Helvetiaplatz and the railway bridge . The other part of Langstrasse which continues towards Limmattalstrasse is just a normal boring street . Not really much to see there . There are a couple of ethnic grocery stores and a shop that sells hemp products, which by Zurich standards is maybe moderately exotic , but nothing to worry about .

But even the “bad” bit of Langstrasse is very tame . There are a couple of clubs specializing in different types of music , and at certain hours you might see the odd prostitute or drug dealer hanging around the entrances to those clubs . But you’re more likely to just see party folk having a good time . If you go down some of the side streets there a handful of cool pubs and bars . But it’s very much a live and let live atmosphere and bad things don’t really happen . I don’t know what your reference is. But if you go to London or Paris or Chicago even so called nice streets are more seedy than that .

And this is the end that is the furthest away from Limattalstrasse remember .

I guess the worst thing about Limmattalstrasse is the noise from traffic. But even that is totally moderate compared to big streets in other cities .

Re: limmatstrasse safe or not?

Limmatstrasse 30 has nothing to do with Langstrasse, apart from ending in strasse. It is very close to the HB and right next to the bus station, so it is not the cosiest location, but unsafe? I live closer to Langstrasse and it is not unsafe, it is or can be noisy, especially at night.

Re: limmatstrasse safe or not?

I think it is safe in the sense that you are not likely to get attacked etc.

However I would advise visiting at night before you decide to take the flat. I had the possibility to have a flat on one of the side streets off Langerstrasse, some of which are very nice, however when I arrived at at 10pm there were a few prostitutes hanging around outside the potential flat. Again, not very dangerous, but not something you may want to see day in day out.

I have done so many times, hence why I said that. The Swiss call it dangerous, they just don't know any better.

I meant to quote the OP, but didn't. I find the area unpleasant, but safe.

Re: limmatstrasse safe or not?

We lived just one street over from Limmatstrasse 30 (on Austellungsstrasse) for a couple of years, when I first moved here. What I didn't like about the area is that it was dirty and quite loud. We couldn't sleep with our windows open in the summer due to all the cars driving by, pumping their bass, etc. late at night. Also, there were a lot of prostitutes and drug dealers in the area. I remember standing on our balcony one night and seeing a prostitute squatting next to a dumpster, peeing.

Re: limmatstrasse safe or not?

From my experience, it very much depends on your profile. If you are a thick-skinned individual from any big city with some experience dealing with antisocial behavior, then you will be fine there. If you are a bit more vulnerable individual, then you may find this place slightly dangerous. Just saw a group of drunken adulteens the other night passing by the bus station from the Sihlquai, violently trying to board a tram unmasked and verbally harassing every women in their sight - it may be ugly, illegal and somewhat dangerous, but manageable for most people.

The Swiss know full well that it isn't dangerous but they like to perpetuate the yarn.

ZŁrich wouldn't be a proper city if it didn't have an uglier and more dangerous side.

So stories get repeated or exaggerated.

Ask around and you'll hear no end to stories of things that supposedly once happened there, such as the time my neighbour's brother in law's friend's cousin saw a guy drop a cigarette butt back in 1969.

back in the day when the EF was still a friendlier place and dinosaurs still roamed the earth we had a thread that went on and on started by somebody who was upset that a prostitute had pooped in their front garden on Sihlquai.

As the thread unravelled it turned out that the houses on Sihlquai don't have front gardens and that the OP lived in Kanton Zug. But he/she had read a newspaper article claiming it was so.

It was EF comedy at its best.

I think the area has changed quite a bit over the last few years and people reminiscing on what it was like in their own wild days may be disappointed if they were to revisit.

The strip joints are mostly gone and gentrification is the word there days. Many of the bars have gone up market and installed proper lighting, with people coming for the craft beers rather than for the cheesy pickup lines.

Even the areas in which prostitutes may legally operate have been tightened and police occasionally patrol to make sure they are sticking to the rules.

Give it another couple of years and Langstrasse may well be pedestrianized with jugglers and buskers to amuse the tourists.

Re: limmatstrasse safe or not?

We stayed in a hotel just off Langstrasse for one night about 4 years ago when we went to Zurich for an Elvis Costello gig. We knew nothing about the area until one of OHs colleagues who'd lived in Zurich told us it was red light after we'd booked it.

When we went out it was still daylight as we were going to eat before the gig, it was also pouring with rain so we didn't notice anything under our umbrellas. Coming back it was dry and dark so it was a different story. We passed a number of "ladies of the night" who were either transvestite or transexual congregating on one part of Langstrasse, there were a number of pole dancing places and a porn cinema specialising in private rooms for couples about 3 doors down. It reminded me of London's Soho in the 80s

Never slept a wink for the racket from the street with people screaming and shouting plus police sirens all night. I was dead to the world on the train back to Basel.

Bear in mind at that point we were living opposite the corner of Kleinbasel's red light zone at Webergasse, with all the screaming, shouting and drug dealing that went with that, but i would honestly say that night near Langstrasse was noisier.

AFAIK that cinema closed down years ago. No idea why it's still there. If you peek in through the window it's totally trashed inside.

The place with the huge silhouette of a pole dancer in the window isn't actually a pole dancing place either, or hasn't been for years. It's some sort of dance place nowadays. I was only in there once with a friend from Germany who had been made to believe (by his kids) that it was the coolest place in all of Zurich. We left after about 10 minutes because he realized he was old enough to have been the grandad of most of that crowd. I think thy left the pole dancer window because they thought it looks cool.

Leaving stuff that reminds people of the past of that area seems to be the done thing. There is an up-market restaurant called Nachtigall which I believe is named after a very seedy bar also called Nachtigall that closed down long long ago. I guess there is a certain degree of perceived coolness in basking in that type of references to the past.
