Malus Domestica Elstar Apple tree

Hi there,

I bought this Malus Domestica Elstar Apple tree last summer. This is a tree that can grow in a big pot. When I bought , the tree didn't look very happy as it had very few leaves and was in a small pot. I put it in a big pot and watered it regularly until the start of last winter. Then the tree shed all the leaves and went dormant. In Feb/March this year it started to flower and I did a stupid mistake of watering it. Then we had this cold spell snowing in April and probably it went into a shock and so far it hasn't released a single leaf. I was busy with my personal problems and couldn't really take care of it. I see it's not dead yet as the stem hasn't dried. Was wondering is there anything I could do to resurrect it? Or do I have to wait till next Spring? Do you think it's already dead? Please find enclosed images of the tree

Also why is this post in travel/day trips/free time?

It would probably get more replies in the gardening thread.

Is it a young tree?

It's not untypical for very young trees to produce flowers but then shed them without producing fruit.

Trees take time to grow. Continue taking good care of your tree and you might get luckier next year.

I donít know about this species but many apple varieties take a few years to get settled in. I wouldnít abandon it yet. Keep the soil moist and see how it does next spring. It could be a couple of years before you see any fruit.

Is it possible to move it to the gardening thread then?

Sorry my bad- I meant leaves. Tree doesn't have any leaves since last winter.

Sometimes trees can do strange things. A shock can lead to the premature shedding of leaves or them not coming out in the first place. A tree can also renew its leaves until very late in the summer. For example if it loses its leaves in a hailstorm. Trees are amazingly robust in that respect.

Keep watering the tree. Make sure the soil doesn't dry out but also don't over water. Make sure there is no waterlogging of the soil as this leads to suffocation and rot.

And be patient.

I once had a tree that had been in a pot all its life and I planted it outside one November. When no leaves appeared the following Spring I assumed it hadn't survived the winter and left it for dead. It then burst into leaf in August and refused to shed them until January. It was in normal sync the year after though. Maybe sometimes trees can get confused with the seasons.

I donít think that pot is big enough. Again I donít know this variety, but trees like to extend their roots both vertically and horizontally.

Iíd wait until it cools down a little and change the pot. The sooner the better.

Dilip Gem, did you buy a 'patio' Elstar, that is a grafted dwarf variety? Or is this a regular Elstar?

And if the dwarf variety, is the graft above the soil line?

Also, how is the drainage in that pot? And what soil did you use?

ETA:

Also, what is your elevation?

Elstar generally doesn't tolerate higher (from 600-a.800m up, sun, shelter, winter cold dependent) elevations too well.
