My tenant rights during a major repair/renovation

Hi,

The apartment I live in required some major repair/renovation (the roof was damaged and had to be redone). So, we had to move out temporarily while the repair is taking place (around three weeks). During this time, our neighbors were away on vacation, and we moved our stuff into their place and currently living there while the repair is taking place. I have a few questions regarding this and my rights as a tenant:

1. Do I have to pay the rent during this time? (note that the owner didn't provide a place for us, and we are staying at our neighbor's and moved our stuff ourselves)

2. Should I ask for some compensation for the caused trouble?

3. If the repair takes more time than planned (and our neighbors come back), does the owner have to provide us a place to stay and pay for all the costs (including moving our stuff)? In this case, should I ask for additional compensation?

I don't know whether this changes anything but please note this is happening while we are in the middle of a pandemic and we are also working from home, which means this whole thing is causing us even more trouble than usual.

Thanks.

I would say 1. no. 2. yes. 3. yes. Make the demands to your landlord. "Don't ask - don't get".

Thanks for your answer.

Do you happen to know specific rules or tenant rights mentioned somewhere that I can use as a reference to back up my claims if needed? If yes, could you please provide a few pointers?

And do you know whether they can raise the rent now after the renovation is done (they may use that as a counter-measure)?

Plenty of stuff online about this topic, in both French and German

Be sure to click on the second and third tabs on the first link, where you'll find useful templates, tips, and questions with answers
