Cedar planks for a closet

So, I am considering a DIY job with a friend to make a cedar closet for storing clothes but have had difficulty finding planks of the aromatic eastern red cedar for the job

Has anyone come across this? I have called around a few lumbar yards with no luck so far

If you find them, please let us know. One of the things I miss about CA is my walk-in closet lined in cedar.

Does not look like it no, it has a reddish color - plus description say it is a veneer. You need raw/untreated planks of the wood as it is the odor/oils that are the key

Okay, this then?
You can have veneering or saw wood.

This is it where my search for it is concerned. Hope you'll find it.

The botanical name is apparently Juniperus virginiana, I have a couple of leads atm - will share once I can confirm

I'll also contact the site you shared @Curley, perhaps they also sell or know where I can find the version I need

Re: Cedar planks for a closet

What we used in CA is Calocedrus decurrens. Very scented and red-and-cream colour.

They are a huge seller with a warehouse in Kriens, I pass them every day while cycling to work. I think they also have a shop, or at least a place where people pick up wood by themselves.

What you need may differ from what you're looking for.
Other types of wood may do the job just as well, or even better.

Re: Cedar planks for a closet

Very true Max, truth is I have read that research doesn't necessarily support the anti-mite effects of cedar to begin with. I guess many of us ex pats have grown up with this as a successful solution but indeed there may be better options. I'll have to expand my research more up front probably before deciding on the appropriate material

Re: Cedar planks for a closet

Given that there's a world wide shortage of wood at present you will struggle to find what you are looking for. I have not seen any here and a quick search from my suppliers confirm this. A few places have chestnut but I am not sure if it has the same qualities. Pearl.ch has cedar rings to put on each coathanger which has a similar effect.

Is the shortage due to the DIY explosion over the last year? I heard normal timber is in short supply, not to mind specific wood types.

My read on the situation is with the start of Covid manufacturers predicted a slowdown and then with lockdowns further reductions in production resulted. With people restricted to their homes a lot decided t was time for a change or renovation so demand went up as supply went down.

On a recent job 3ply that is normally in stock in a variety of qualities was only available in the highest quality so a price increase of Chf40 per m2 plus the price has risen 20 to 30% this year added Chf1500 to a small job and was a two month wait to get it.

There is a shortage of wood but AFAIK this affects primarily the lower end of the market. Chipboard and spruce and the sort of stuff that IKEA thrives on, as well as construction timber. At the more high end of the market prices have been more stable.
