A friend who is struggling to find a place

Hi all,

A friend of mine has moved to Zurich for a new job and is currently struggling to find a reasonably priced place in Zurich to call home.

I have been hosting him temporarily but my flatmates are coming back on the 27th and it will be exremely overcrowded in my flat.

I was wondering if there's anyone in this forum to host him for a few days? or find him a permenant room?

He's the nicest person you could ever meet. He's respecful, quiet and friendly.

He's not on this forum so I thought I could help him and post this.

Thanks a million in advance.

Can he live in another Canton, and commute? Can he sublet for a few months in another Canton, or in Zürich, til he finds something more permanent?

Yes that's an option long term but staying in Airbnbs for so long got his budget very streched. I guess if he finds something from Aug the 27th till the 31st at least, he'll be good for now.

Yes, coming to another country, especially one which is just about has the highest cost in the World, needs planning. Good luck to your friend.

Re: A friend who is struggling to find a place

Now is the peak time to be looking. If he has a job, then I would suggest he ask the employer for help finding something.... they can give a reference/recommendation...

Try signing up for the daily email from https://immomailing.ch/ … it has details of rental vacancies not advertised elsewhere.

Another option is the youth hostel in Wollishofen, which does single rooms. The food ain’t bad there either.

Sympathies to your friend; it’s no fun to have that uncertainty about where you’ll live.

Re: A friend who is struggling to find a place

Has your friend considered moving outside of Zurich, where the rent is often cheaper / more affordable and then commuting to work? Also, maybe finding a shared apartment is something to consider. I believe they're called "WG-Zimmers" here. I found some available via a Google search:
