No building I ever lived in would allow that.
Mine was with masking tape for over 15 years in Zurich

But you've surely seen such things, as it's pretty common for hand-written names to be taped on mailboxes. Just as those who've only lived in buildings where this is common will be aware there are other fancy blocks of flats, where engraved nameplates are used.

Tell me you're wealthy without telling me you're wealthy

I arrived here as student. Thus, the landlord allowed this for the flat I could afford along other flatmates.

If there is a big turnover of people renting rooms in an apartment, changing the name each time on the letterbox can be expensive for the main tenant. What about having your mail collected at the post office?
I certainly wouldn´t sign anything that is untrue.
period.
Yes, this is what I told the main tenant. If the issue is about the mailing address, then I can open a PO BOX at the local post office to receive mails.

Also I told the main tenant that at this point I'm okay with option #1, because thanks to @Axa's post I think I'm confident that I don't have to register my address with the canton due to the special circumstances with the carte de légitimation and I can forward my mails to the post office, which now makes sense to me how her previous renters who worked in the same organization as me were able to do option #1.

I think the main tenant might be found some business potential while hosting people with carte de légitimation. As mentioned above, if subtenants payment are charged more than the total rent of the house, of course they don't want written evidence of this.

Or considering the proximity to France, they might be other people already registered as living there (because work in Geneva) but actually living in France in a larger and cheaper house. It might be called tax optimization.

The issue is that main tenant has a motivation to avoid recognizing OP as a paying subtenant living there and receiving mail.
So I'm not exactly sure how much the actual apartment rent is, but I think the price she offered is reasonable and lower than the median price for a similar offer. Also given the proximity to the place where I work, it seems to be a good offer.

I think her main problem is that if I "officially" rent the room in her apartment then there will be tax associated with the sub-renting, which defeats the purpose of sub-renting it in the first place. Option #1, which still feels a bit shady to me because I can do the same thing in US but won't have a problem with the mailing address, would work for me because I can rent a PO BOX at the post office. The previous renter was also able to use a c/o for the address for the bank. And since I don't have to officially register my address then I don't think I'm doing anything wrong or can be proven to do anything wrong.

My only problem is option #2 is because I will have something in writing that I didn't pay for the rent when I paid for it. I feel like that would definitely make me complicit in this scheme.

The admin in my office also told me that I can just use whitener to add my name to the mailing box when I told her of this problem I mean it's a good suggestion, but it wasn't the solution to my main problem

What is your main problem then? you do not need to have a permit, you do not have to register (you can do it voluntarily, though, but why?).
If the problem is having an address where you can receive mail, then c/o one of your flatmate, or tape your name to the mailbox, or give your office at the international organization, you have (at least) three possible solution.

It's not a problem anymore. I was just telling what I encountered yesterday when I talked to the admin to see if not having a mailing address in Swiss would be a problem because my main tenant said that she won't put my name in the mailbox. Putting my name there won't solve it because the main tenant doesn't want me to be officially registered as one of the subtenants. I was just joining the conversations about what others have used to solve having your own name in the mailbox issue

Ok, from the full thread it is still unclear to me if you need a domicile address, a residence address or a correspondence address.

But I hope the international organization is giving you a decent salary!

Yes, so the conclusion is I don't think I need a domicile address due to the specific circumstances that I'm in. It would be nice to have a correspondence address, but if that means I have to sign something untrue then I don't think it is worth the risk. I'd rather open a PO BOX at the local post office and have mails delivered there.

[Btw there are so many great posts here that have helped me make a more informed decision, but I don't know how to "thank" each post...]

Re: Help! Domicile mailing address when renting a room in Switzerland

Ok. So I ended up not renting the apartment.

I was told that I can't use the address of the apartment and sent my contract to anyone else -- which beats the purpose of having signed contract anyway. This gets shadier than I initially thought and I think it's better to just look for a more legitimate contract.
