Opening left conspiracy - washing machines and dryers

What is it with WMs and Dryers? I want ones that have the hinge on the right so that the door swings open to the right. It seems that most open the other way and the ones that do open right are much more expensive.

What's the deal with this? Is this some strange standardization I've never heard about before?

Re: Opening left conspiracy - washing machines and dryers

We had the same problem when we bought our washing machine but simply solved it by putting it upside down.

Makes a change for us lefties not to have to find stuff that works for us in this mainly righthanded world.

Usually you can swap it with a bit of tooling around. Look at the inside and see if the same bolt attachments are there?, if so you can swap it. The last installation guy offered to do it, but I didn't find it necessary.

Re: Opening left conspiracy - washing machines and dryers

Usually, it is a simple matter to reverse a tumble dryer door to open on the other side.

Some wash machines also have this feature, but not many, you have to check with the supplier or Google.

Re: Opening left conspiracy - washing machines and dryers

We once had a weird Miele combination, where the washer had the right hinge and the dryer had it on the left (there might have been some reason behind it, but it was hard to operate with a single hand and caused me hitting the head on the top door because of the limited space to operate into). This brand still have a lot of right hinged devices.
Personally we ended up switching to top-loaders: they take more space, but are quieter and easier to operate (a matter of taste and habit, of course).

When you shop around you can request this option. I know Miele offers it, so most likely others, too.

Re: Opening left conspiracy - washing machines and dryers

Our Miele washer has a right hinge and the tumbler has a left. It works very well when they are side by side.

With the tower installation, you have to be careful the tumbler door is fully open so as not to hit your head on it when unloading the washer below and placing clothes in the tumbler.

Re: Opening left conspiracy - washing machines and dryers

I just went through this buying process earlier this year.

Nettoshop provides a useful filter in the search function so that you can search by right hinges (Turanschlag rechts).

Miele is the only one offering this as standard, v-Zug and Schulthess and the more expensive Electrolux provide this as options. All other brands have left hinges as standard.

Most WM doors can’t be swapped. On the other hand some dryer doors can be swapped. I ended up having to buy the Miele W1 series. Although I’m not a fan of Miele, this is one of the very few options where the WM hinge is set on the right, and the matching dryer has doors that can be swapped to the right.

Yup.
We have the same arrangement with our Mieles

The problem I am having is finding the function/recepticle in the washing machine that randomly extracts single socks from the washing... I need to disable it.
