Gold coast villages for young parents

We are an international couple in our mid-30s living in the City of Zurich with a little one on the way next spring. After two years living centrally (and coming from London and Madrid), its time to move further out and enjoy the quiet life with extra space (we are done with centre-city living). We are looking at villages on the Gold Coast all the way down to Mannedorf (Zollikon, Kusnacht, Erlenbach, Herrliberg, Meilen, Uetikon Am See).

We have had a walk around Zollikon and Kusnacht and both were very nice and quaint but we are still open to the others. We would probably be without a car at first (but can get one if needed) and my wife needs to commute to Opfikon via train 3 days a week. We don't like moving (who does), so would be nice to think ahead and locate ourselves near a good kita, KG and state primary school. Our German is limited but we would like our child to attend a local kita and school to pick up the language and integrate. We would also like to maintain an international network too.

We have yet to visit Meilen but i wondered how it differs to Kusnacht. Cheaper perhaps? Also heard good things. We are looking for a 3.5 and have budgeted CHF 2.5-3K per month. Going up to CHF 3.5k would be possible but would rather not. There doesnt seem like a great choice on homegate for Kusnacht rentals or Meilen but probably best to home-in on somewhere first and then put the feelers out at work/forums/FB groups? We are looking to complete the move over the next 6 months.

To summarise:
Any insights on life in general re Gold Coast villages for young parents?
Have any parents been highly impressed with particular kitas, KGs or state primary schools (with DaZ options)?
given disparity of rents on Homegate, any price points for a 3.5 rooms?

thanks

For 2.5 - 3-5k per month you will get very little in that area. Am currently looking to downsize from my apartment as well from an equally sought-for area near to Zurich center, and can only wish you the best of luck!

Re: Gold coast villages for young parents

Does it have to be Gold Coast? Have you considered what I term Platinum Coast? (Albisrieden, Wiedikon, Zuri West, Altstetten, Wipkingen). For example, Albisrieden where we live has a lot of new apartment blocks springing up, a new primary school being built, plenty of parks and green / off-road areas for kids to play. Also the local GZ has a lot of activities for young families. And Opfikon is about 30 / 40 mins by public transport - 50 mins by push bike though Bucheggplatz at rush hour is never fun.

Also check out the Silver coast - e.g. Adliswil, Wadenswil, Thalwil are not huge commutes to Opfikon. And what about the areas around Opfikon / Glattbrugg? Some nice looking villages and hopefully more affordable.

There are other areas and these are limited examples but maybe you need to be flexible, especially in Zürich.

Good luck!

Nick

Lived in the best areas of the „Gold Coast“ for a couple of decades. My best friend established and owned the best Montessori KITA there. Your groan to my post however doesn‘t exactly motivate me to want to help.

How about giving them the benefit of the doubt for now?
Accidentally groaning a post is quite easy to do especially on a phone or tablet and they may not even realise they’ve done it.

Re: Gold coast villages for young parents

Thanks for the suggestions. We will take a look at those areas you mention. Not keen on other side of lake. We have a couple of friends the Gold Coast and enjoy the sun / lake on the evenings.

ZR….I don’t know what a groan is _ unintentional. We have friends in Ueitikon and Meilen how have bought houses and also know the rental market within their respective apartment blocks. 3-3.5k is fine for a 3.5 apartment. Kusnacht and Zollikon seem more expensive but equally, it seems very circumstantial based on standard of accommodation and proximity to lake / train station. Was more looking for insights on life in these villages in general for young parents and we don’t need a Montessori kita. We would rather try and ensure there are decent stare primary schools near by

OP: it sounds as if you’re more concerned about local schools and would like to get some experiences of those whose children are in the system. Personally, I wouldn’t worry about local schools in that affluential area. In your case, it will come down to the teacher and not the school.

Your child will be fine.

Hello
In the lower right-hand corner of each message you’ve got the option to «thank» or «groan» a post made by another member.

You also have the option to allocate positive or negative «reputation» points to a member’s post by selecting the balance scales icon in the upper right hand corner of the post is question.

These options are available for a certain amount of time. If the post is too old you can no longer thank, groan, or give rep.

Hope this helps,
Welcome to EF

@others please let’s not have groaning etc of newbies learning their way. Thank you.

Thanks. It’s a bit of everything really as these things usually are when deciding to move. When we visit our friends in Uetikon AS it’s nice but we note there is no real ‘centre’ there as such. This could be quite isolating. One would maybe need a car perhaps, so that would have to be added in the budget. Kusnacht feels more like a village with amenities clustered towards the lake. We will visit Meilen soon

I live in Uetikon and it does lack a town centre. I would choose Meilen if you can afford it and Mannedorf a very close second. S7 express from Meilen means 20 minutes to Zurich but it does get busy, if you are in Mannedorf you will get a seat but touch and go in Meilen in the morning. Excellent supermarkets and lake side swimming in Mannedorf.

Re: Gold coast villages for young parents

I have lived in Herrliberg, Uetikon am See and Stafa. We were first shown Kusnacht when we came over some 30 years ago and it didn't appeal to me personally as it simply couldn't match our UK lifestyle. We had a bigger budget than you are looking at, but also wanted a bigger place and Kusnacht just didn't work for us. I do also think you might struggle to get something really nice in your price range. We settled in Uetikon am See for a good 15 years and I enjoyed it there very much.

Our experience with the schools there was good, with the exception of a couple of teachers who no longer work there. Our experience of Kindergarten couldn't have been better and it set my children up well for their school lives and provided me with my happiest times with the other Mums.

We moved to Stafa to avoid the secondary school model in Uetikon which was a mistake from the educational point of view, but a great success otherwise.

Unless anyone knows anything in particular about the schools on the Gold Coast, then I don't think you can go far wrong. Personally I like Mannedorf, Uetikon, Herrliberg and Stafa (which I know is out of your search range, but does mean you can get a seat on the train). I know lots of people in Kusnacht who are very happy there and have a very nice lifestyle with a big international community, but rents are expensive and it really depends on what is important to you. Personally I prefer to live in a house and that was possible in Uetikon and Stafa but would have stretched the budget to breaking point in Kusnacht. We compromised on proximity to Zürich but gained on size of property and amenities.

@RTN - thank you. Is there anything in particular about Meilen that you like? Numerous friends have vouched for it. Just looking on google maps, it does feel like it has a definitive centre. As parents to be, we could be over-estimating the amount of time we have to frequent pubs and restaurants as oppose to changing nappies. Being British, i do like a decent bar or pub within a 15 minute walk. We also dont have a car (currently) so the S7 is a great suggestion for my wife.

I live in Kusnacht, but from reading your posts, would also recommend Meilen for you. It does have a proper centre with a number of bars and restaurants.

We moved to our 3rd Kusnacht apartment earlier this year, and though Kusnacht remained our first choice for the search, we had decided that Meilen would be our second choice. Personally, I don't like Herrliberg and Erlenbach doesn't quite hit the spot for me. Zollikon has one of the best swimming pools in the area https://badizollikon.ch/ , but with the car ferry, Meilen is like a gateway to so much great countryside whilst having far more shops than anywhere else on the Gold Coast until you get to Rapperswil.

As for Kusnacht... it's great from April - October and December, but for the rest of the winter it can be extremely quiet in the evenings. I've always said that it suits me now in my 50s, but I couldn't have lived here in my 20s or 30s. We used go into Zurich for nights out and regular gigs, and it's only 12mins home.

Sorry that I can't advise regarding schools, etc.

You're looking at the nicest areas of Zurich, I really think you're going to be fine in general.

My main recommendation would be with a child to go over 3.5 rooms unless you don't care at all about visitors or any home office ever.

Yes, thank you. My wife is with you on that and im now inclined to agree. My parents from the UK will visit more (the power of grandkids) and we wouldn't want them to feel every time they visit, we are all cramped in a 3.5. 4.5/two-bath makes sense.

Thanks - this is really helpful (as are all the nuggets of information within the comments - all very much appreciated). We walked around Kusnacht on a warm sunny day in the summer and the Hotel Sonne garden was fantastic but perhaps the winters would be a little drastic. Meilen or Uetikon Am See seem like great options for us. We could move up on budget (my wife is the spender/extrovert and I am the grumpy frugal one) but regardless, it seems fairly categorical that one gets more bang for their buck in Meilen/Uetikon regarding space and the centre/amenities in Meilen will most definitely appeal to my wife. We will meet some friends there next Saturday and look forward to exploring a new place to get a good feel.
