Of course it's actually what depositors do as well, as the banks found out in 2007

Re: Swiss mortgage/remortgage on house in UK?

I guess I will just walk in a Credit Suisse of UBS office and ask there. I am just interested to get the money in CHF hopefully this will work....

I am wondering if the same caution would also in the insurance sector when one tries to insure in Switzerland a property abroad...

Thanks for the guidance guys,
Jorgeu

HI Jorgeu,

I am pretty sure these are nigh on impossible to get, there is too much exposure for the banks or any other type of institution. If you get any success please do post about it here.

For the next step down you can look at international mortgages from the likes of HSBC Offshore or equivalent, i.e. non-tinpot banks (i.e. ones that won't go under tommorow) who run the mortgages for expats from guernsey / isle of man etc. They are not much more of an improvement than UK mortgages but perhaps easier to get if you are an expat.

Something that used to be available but I can't find any more also is currency switching mortgages. This is where you can move between currencies in your mortgage on demand or at predefined intervals (i.e. option to switch every 3 months). This allowed you to take it out in say GBP then if the pound strengthened you could switch it to CHF,and then back again later if necessary. pretty high stakes currency speculation but with potentially big rewards. Seems to have disappeareed with the crash though but if you come across it in your travels pls do post about it...

Mike

Re: Swiss mortgage/remortgage on house in UK?

It's possible to do if the mortgage is small relative to value & small relative to income. It you want to borrow 80% & 4 times earnings FORGET IT

Re: Swiss mortgage/remortgage on house in UK?

I would like to discuss this topic again, in particular how to obtain a mortgage on a UK property purchase, while residing in Switzerland.

Most/all the threads in the forum are now quite old on this topic and from the inquiries I've made, banking/lender rules have changed significantly, so the previously given advice/options are no longer valid.

My own personal experience to date, is that HSBC can offer you an expatriate mortgage however you have to deposit £60K with them and every month you fall below £60K, they charge you £35.

I assume that there is a limit as to how far below £60K you can go, which I've yet to determine.

Does anyone have experience with the HSBC option or perhaps you can suggest an alternative.

HSBC Premier are fairly incompetent in the Expat Jersey branch. I was quite impressed with my initial phone call after opening he account however crap at best ever since. I have not yet got round to doing anything with the account, which took 9 months to open despite being a Premier account holder in another jurisdiction.
