Coming soon to Zurich

Hello everyone! I just signed up to this forum. I could be moving to Zurich in the very near future.

I was there last Friday for job interview. Afterwards, I took some time to look around the Centrum area.

Now, I am wondering how easy or difficult it would be to secure a decent accomodation in Zurich.

I would like to start off with a small flat and do the big move from UK in 3 to 4 months.

I do not expect I can send my two boys to any of the english speaking private schools, being a singl mom.
But this is my biggest concern. Although we all speak German, I would prefer them to end up with A-leves instead of Abitur.

Any ideas about school and accomodation is appreciated

Re: Coming soon to Zurich

Hi Del,

welcome.

We have only been here a short while, but my first question would be where will you be working- what location, because that will determine a lot about the area where you can realistically live, public transport, and also schools within that area, and before/after school care etc.

also, I'd highly recommend asking your employer to assist with finding you suitable accommodation - makes life a lot easier! - and then also the obligation is on them, rather than you.

What we did was use the real estate site - homegate.ch - and then click through possible places, and check their location (you can click on the address of any apartment and it will give you the map and you can then also select on the map things like local shops and bus stops)...

We spent hours and hours on this, but it paid off - we emailed a list of places that fit our criteria (x bedrooms, close to bus stop, convenient to shops, within x minutes travel to work, bottom or first floor etc...) - also of course availbility to suit our dates - then we emailed a list of 6-8 that suited us and we left the employer to check them out and try to confirm one.

We moved in sight-unseen and I must say we did extremely well - of course, the employer also wants you to be happy, and if they are local, they will have a more realistic idea of what rentals are actually reasonable, good location etc.

That's my 2cents worth, as they say...so good luck.

Re: Coming soon to Zurich

PS. just wanted to add - use the search function on the english forum here to find lots and lots of info - you'll find most of the questions you want to ask, have been asked before.

It's time consuming, but much better to do as much research as you can before you get here...as I have found with my family, life takes over very quickly and you have so little time to do anything else...

Indeed, you'll always get better answers if you make the effort to use the search function and to start a separate thread in the relevant sections for each question.

I move this thread to Housing in General. Please start a second thread in the Family Matters forum for the school questions, if you don't find enough information there.

Re: Coming soon to Zurich

Hi!

I am also coming soon to Zurich and I find it quite difficult to find the accomodation - even there is a lot of sites for that.

I read here that the employer could help with finding a flat. Is it common?

I have time until October.

Have a nice day and greetings from Lausanne,

karin

I don't think it is that common for the employer to help find
accomodation.

There are many relocation services, but I have used one once.
This service didn't do anything that I couldn't do myself.

Perhaps looking a bit outside of Zürich city would help.
