Seven years on, anyone recommend a chimney sweep in and around Zh?
Get a small boy and a long rope, then pull him up, and then down. It used to work this way.

Re: Sex [Fireplace Chimney Check]

Just had ours inspected. We were not planning to, but we had a peek through the inspection cover in the attic, and discovered that a chunk of the liner was 'not there'. I suspect it's been like that for years.

Cue chimney sweep. He said, yes it needs to be repaired, you can contact this local guy, but you can go on using the fireplace it in the meantime, as otherwise it's fine.

Local guy came around, said yup, 15 min job to fix. He came around again about 7 yesterday evening, and repaired it.

Now he will contact the chimney sweep via the secret handshake channels so that he can come around and clean it.

I was expecting the worst case - i.e., "oh, well, you need a new chimney liner for ca. 2x10^6 CHF mate", but it wasn't so.

it makes me wonder about whether a chimney-check is either recommended (what frequency ?)
it is good that you are thinking about safe "chimney sweeping". it always wise to take precautions and even if you are enjoying the same chimney regularly, or whether you like to burn your wood in different fireplaces it doesn't hurt to have regular check-ups.

or knowing Switzerland more likely its a law. Can anyone help with any information about what is required ?
i would suggest you visit your doctor in the first instance and if necessary he can refer you to the right specialist or clinics.

That certainly explains a few things then

Re: Chimney Sweep...[Fireplace Chimney Check]

So we had the chimney sweep in again. The small fireplace has been unused for like 5 years. The guy spent less than 20 minutes in the apartment. Sat in front of the fireplace on his phone with the vacuum running but not doing anything. Eventually left saying he would note that it was unused. Then he stood outside for 15 minutes and every so often went downstairs in the lift carrying a single item each time.
I just got the bill: 140 CHF including 10CHF for the dust mat that he reused for all three flats. Flat fee for chimney sweeping and a flat fee for "oven" cleaning (which was more), even though it was clean already. Fee for disposal of old coals of which there was none and flat fee for office administration (I guess pulling figures out of your ...um... air takes some work)

If the charge is the same for all three flats with chimneys that's 420CHF or so per hour, including his time-wasting. BTW this is Fred Senn AG Kaminfeger, for Basel.

Five years in our house... and now we have a sweep. Can't get rid of them. Apparently snipers and mantraps are illegal.

For anyone in Baselland, the relevant laws and tariffs are here:

Laws: http://www.baselland.ch/761-111-htm.301803.0.html
Fees: http://www.baselland.ch/761-17-htm.301805.0.html

Nice work if you can get it - 60CHF just for turning up. It's going to be fun. We don't use our fireplace, haven't in 5 years and never intend to use it. Our heating is gas, and we have a service contract which gets it serviced every year.

We'll have a chat with our Gemeinde office tomorrow, and with the company that services our boiler. Any bill we get will be gone over with a fine-toothed comb.

Our next door neighbours are going to have even more fun. They removed their fireplace four years ago...
Anyone have recent information regarding the requirement in Basel Land? I recall they were getting rid of the requirement in Basel Stadt, but I wasn't sure if it went through and whether BL did the same.

I received a card in the post from the local KF.

Oh wait. Found this: https://www.binningen.ch/de/dienstle...egedienst%20ab.

In English: You still have to get the chimney swept in Basel Land but it is now a free market system. You can choose your favorite chimney sweeper.

I couldn't see anything in the law that refers to cleaning. I already have an annual inspection by the city to ensure that emissions from the oil heater are OK. I wonder whether this already covers the requirement.
