| | Letter to landlord giving notice of leaving? Any examples
Hi there.
Does anyone have, or know where I can find, an example of a letter to a landlord giving notice of my intention to leave? I'm assuming this has to be in German....

I Used the following which seemed to work OK | Quote: | | | | <Name>
Mit freundlichen Grüssen, <signature> <Name>, <place> | | | | | Which basically means;
In accordance with our contact I hereby submit my notice of leaving. I will leave the above address at the end of <month> <year>.
I request a written notification of this letter.

It helps to add the Mietobejkt(s) as per the summary in your contract(s) like "3.5 Zi. Whg. EG Rechts" especially if you rent a Bastelraum, Parkplatz etc.
Why? Sometimes they have different contracts.....

..and you need to post it registered to do this you write EINSCHREIBEN written in block letters on the top of the envelope..otherwise your landlord could very well argue they have never received your notice letter.

If you send it registered you do not need to ask for confirmation of receipt. Also, if you are married and it is a family home your spouse must also sign the letter of termination.

The Mieterverband as a whole section of this webpage dedicated to procedures and samples of letters for every occasion: http://www.mieterverband.ch/zh_musterbriefe.0.html
They also have several checklists for leaving the apartment suitable for return to the landlord and tips to check during the walk through.
Hope this may help you,
Lucy

The letter samples here are great - thank you!
We would like to add something like
"if possible we would like to leave the property early and would therefore be grateful if you could assist us in finding new tenants ASAP. We are prepared to pay all costs relating to this"
Is there anyone who can help us translate this paragraph? We are well aware that we will have to honor our notice period but it would be much easier if we can work with the landlord to find a new tenant. Many thanks |

Ok I have finally got round to type my letter of notice ready to post for the end of the month. My landlord no longer lives at the address shown on the rental agreement and I do not have his new address. Normally I would call him to ask for it but I know he is on holiday and doesn't get back until the end of the month which is cutting it fine with regards to giving official notice! My landlord has an agent dealing with the rental but I do not have the contact name of anyone there. I would therefore like to address the letter to my landlord C/O the agent. Can anyone tell me what the German equivilent is of C/O. Many thanks |

Because of a job offer, I am moving out of the country before end of May, hence, I want to terminate my lease a month earlier than I planned. I am trying to beat the three-month notice period. My question is, if I mail my letter to the landlord tomorrow by priority/registered mail such that it will reach him by Monday, February 29, is that enough? Or he has to acknowledge the receipt of the letter? What if he's not there to receive it on Monday? Also, should I send the letter only to the owner, or to the immobilien (company) as well?
Thanks.

I just realized I probably posted on the wrong thread. I did use the letter template here, but realized that this thread is just about sample letters. (Bdw, where is the edit button here?)

Send it registered today and it's considered received on Monday.
As for leaving early, talk to the landlord. He may be Ok by letting you out a bit early, perhaps there's repainting and minor repairs to do anyway.
You can edit for a limited time only.

Thanks. | | | | | The letter should go to the immoblien if that's who you rent through. They're the agents acting for the landlord. The fact that he's around doesn't really come into it. They will notify him that you're terminating the contract.
Yes, you should be okay with registered to get there by Monday. You can track it via the SwissPost website to see when it gets delivered. Remember you'll need to do a handover with the agency before you depart to make sure everything's okay.
Are you sure that it's just a 3 month notice period and that it's not also tied to "official" moving dates, i.e. you have to give notice by the end of March to meet the official moving date of 30th June? If it is tied to specific dates then you'll need to pay the extra month's rent as well. Check your contract to see exactly what it say regarding termination.

Thanks, Medea. I checked my contract and also let a German friend read it and the only restriction it has is that no termination letter can be handed at the end of December.

We did ours in english by email and then confirmed by letter. I didn't use any special wording just said we wish to terminate our tennancy on x date. Didn't have any problems maybe thats just our agent tho!

I just want to second the suggestion of using the Mieterverband website - it has actual templates that you can download, for a number of different scenarios. It's a great resource!

Important thing to note: they may require a signature of all tenants. For us, we had to do two rounds of notice letters, as for the first one it was just me signing it. Landlord then requested a confirmation from my wife as well.
