Finding an apartment - not on websites

Hi All,

We're looking for an apartment to rent in Nyon, but it seems like there is a lot of demand and not much supply so I'm not sure how much of the market is done 'below the radar' through word-of-mouth advertising.

Does anyone have experience finding apartments through means other than via petite announce on the web? eg: through rental agencies, ads outside supermarkets, posted at work, relocation agencies.... ?

Any advice is appreciated as we're making slow progress right now!

Thanks,
Mark.

Re: Finding an apartment - not on websites

Hi Mark,
I don't have much experience in an apartment search but the most effective way is to find "l'agence immobiliere or regie" , subscribe there and call them, the more you call and ask if there is smth the more chance you are, we did like that and found what we wanted for 2 months. Sure you can try homegates or immoscout, or read "Lausanne cités", better a newspaper but here is its site http://www.lausannecites.ch/live/2/home/
as there are many ads there, here is the list of "regies and agences immobilieres" in Nyon.

good luck

Re: Finding an apartment - not on websites

Hey Mark.

I was looking for an apartment in Lausanne for quite a while and wasn't having much luck through the usual channels (homegate, Regies, etc) So I put a post up on here, just outlining the situation and asking if anyone knew of anywhere. 3 days later I was contacted by someone who was moving out in a few months and wanted to get someone sorted to take over the lease from them. Job done.

Hopefully someone will get back to you soon with an offer... And it'll save you the hassle of going through with applying along with 20 other people. If you find someone here, chances are they'll put you forward as the only applicant, so you don't have to worry about being stepped over for a Swiss Couple (They seemed to get preference for the apartments I'd previously applied for)

befriend yourself with a painter/ painting company. they know when a flat goes onto the market at first.
read death notices and check addresses, then
call estate comp in charge of the estate that you have heard your
friends neighbour has died and you want to know if they can let you know
if and when they wanna rent it out again. bit delicate, but...works.

check also the supermarket (eg co-op, migros) boards - sometimes you find adds in there. Also banks sometimes have them.

Another tip is to keep your eyes open while out walking...

That's how I stumbled over my current apartment - a tiny handwritten note in a window that there was an apartment available in the same house and a phone number. It was not advertised anywhere else. This was in Basel, but could probably work in any other city too

Re: Finding an apartment - not on websites

Hi

I too can vouch for the walking around the area of interest with both eyes open technique. The Swiss love notice boards, and lots of communities / railway stations / housing complexes / churches etc. have notice boards, and local properties are advertised here. I found a lock up garage for rent at a very good rate this way, and they are like gold dust round where I live.

Cheers

Jim

Re: Finding an apartment - not on websites

Ok this one is one the web and is a regie. However we got our apartment in Nyon through them. Some of there apartments are not listed on sites like Homegate.

http://www.rytz.com/

They don't seem to have much available in Nyon right now. Still they don't always put everything up on the web.

One other thing to try is the La Cote newspaper it's the regional paper. It has a section for searching on it's site.

http://www.lacote.ch/

It took us a couple of months of looking before we were accepted for an apartment here. We actually got childcare here before we got an apartment which is kind of odd.

Bon chance.

That is a very good and clever advise there. Never thought about that.
