Scratches on floor

Hi all

This has probably been covered, but I cannot find an exact match:-

I moved flat at the end of Jan., and during the moving out ceremonial inspection (has he cleaned the fuse box etc.), the property owner pointed out that the floor in the spare room was badly scratched. I had to put my hand up to that one, as I had shifted a wardrobe without noticing the damage it was doing to the really ugly grey lino underneath. He wants to re-lay the floor in that room, and with it being 8 years old, I'm not expecting a huge bill.
Am I right in thinking that my personal liability insurance will cover this? Has anyone tried this?

All advice greatly appreciated...

Cheers

Jim

Re: Scratches on floor

It should be covered, yes. However, bear in mind that you shouldn't have to pay for the whole reflooring. What you pay should take into account how much of the floor you damaged (10%, 50%?) and how old the flooring was (compared with the generally accepted life expectancy for a floor of that type).

Good luck!

This is very interesting. What else is covered with personal liability insurance? And how do you claim that? Simply forward the bill to the insurer? I got clobbered with a big bill some years back and never knew that you could claim. If only I had known!

I think that there is limitation as to what you can claim. I see from other posts that if you damage your own property, ie fall on the ice with a camera as we did, spill coffee on your pc etc, you are not covered. But if it involves a third party then call your insurance company. Its better for them to sort out the real cost than being sent a bill by your landlord.

Generally you would have to call the insurer and file a claim, maybe even before you know the exact amount. If it is a small amount (higher than your deductible though, otherwise there's no point claiming obviously ) they may just tell them you send you the invoice. If it is larger they may want to get involved more. But in any case you will need to fill out a form explaining what happened to what, etc.

One other thing regarding tenant liability. If you are a member of the MV you can buy an insurance (for very little extra) which will cover the deductible that your private liability insurance doesn't pick up.

I am fairly new to all that and already see that will have to start saving for the final cleaning bill...
Can anyone please explain what is MV and how to become a member?
Also - what sort of liability insurance would you reccomend when renting an appartment?
Many thanks in advance!

Allianz has a reasonably priced Haftpflichtversicherung (personal liability insurance).

Re: Scratches on floor

It might be cheaper to have the floor sanded. I know a guy if you want to go this route.
