Key Cutting

Hi

Can anyone recommend somewhere I can get a key cut in Zurich please. It's for a wardrobe door and looks quite basic.

Many thanks.

Mister Minit will do it, theres one in the bottom of Jelmoli behind the flowers or in St Annahof at the entrance nearest the Hiltl.

Re: Key Cutting

Just out of interest - I need a new front door key to give to someone who is going to work in my home - who I trust. I think it is one of the registered ones. (lots of strategic holes) I presume you need to take some ID to prove you live in the house. Is this all? Never done it in 10 years living here.

That sounds like a Kaba key. You'll probably have to ask your landlord to order another key for you. AFAIK a regular key-cutter won't be able to do it for you, with or without ID.

Sorry Crumbs but they can and they do, however its against your contract really to do so without informing the landlord...

Re: Key Cutting

Problem is I bought my house 5 years ago. I suppose I am my landlord. Just got 2 keys - just want one more.
Maybe I have to take some proof of ownership - or a letter from the bank? Absolutley no idea -was just trying to pre-emt my trip to the Brugg key cutting shop next week.

Got a UK and Swiss passport and driving license - would this be enough?

Re: Key Cutting

OK, I stand corrected.
Perhaps there are different types and levels of security? I know ours can only be ordered.

Yes, some Kaba keys' patents have expired and all services can copy them, others not:

Re: Key Cutting

Hi just out of interest, have heard these kaba keys (the ones with all the holes) cost an awful lot to have copied. Can someone advise? Was thinking about getting one for son. Thanks.

If it's a KABA Patent key and you rent then you have to order it through your landlord. If you own your own apartment then you have to order it through your verwaltung but if you own a house then I think you have to contact KABA directly.

Re: Key Cutting

For security, each set of keys for each lock should be registered with the lock maker and they should be able to tell you how many keys exist for the related lock (cylinder).
We have moved a few times and wanted to be sure our home had no risk of other keys than the 5 that were turned over with our home.
To have the company check and notify us of the quantity, it took a week and proof of our residency.
We had an estimate for a new key Fr. 100.00 or to have the locks replaced which could have cost Fr. 500.00

It depends on what type of Kaba key you have, Kaba 8 or Kaba Star. Only the Kaba Star are restricted and you need to present an id card from Kaba in order to order copies. I would suggest you call up or write to Kaba and ask them what document they need from you to prove that you are the house owner. The key has a number on it that they will need to know. It is possible the previous owner notified them of the change of ownership. Once they are satisified you are the home owner they will issue you an id card and with this you can order additional keys.

If it is a Kaba 8 you do not need an id card for copies.

http://www.kaba.ch/de/Ueber-Kaba/Kon...2/kontakt.html

It is much more expensive to order additional keys without a new cylinder than to order them at the same time as the cylinder.

The keys are very expensive. If you rent, you have the right to have all the keys to the door. The landlord does not have the right to keep a key. So I would confirm with the landlord that no other keys exist and he has none in his possession. In my experience, it is quite common for an apartment or house that is suited to family living to have 4 keys.

Kaba 20 , a copy

Hi all ,

I am living in Zurich , does anyone know where could make a copy of my apartment key ( model kaba 20) . I have the understanding that it is quite difficult to make it , but I have lost one and I need a new one. Was anyone in the same situation??

Thanks in advance!

Re: Kaba 20 , a copy

As far as I know, only your landlord can get copies made.

Talk to them, explain why and maybe you have to pay for it. They can
be costly.

Re: Kaba 20 , a copy

If the key also operates the main entrance to your block, cellar, wash kitchen, etc., you might be liable for a whole new lock and keys for the other residents.

I've heard of this happening before but best to check first.

As you can see on the above link, a Kaba20 can only be copied by the registered owner. You will need to talk to your landlord (...and start saving).
