lack of photos on property ads

Has anyone noticed the lack of photo's of properties on all the websites i.e. homegate.ch, comparis.ch

It never fails to surprise me that they'll show one of of the outside of the apartment block, 3 of the bathroom from different angles and occasionally a couple of kitchen shots, but none of the bedrooms or living room..?

How can you choose places you may want to live without actually seeing the rooms that are available?

Bathrooms and kitchens all tend to be unique in one way or another but bedrooms.. well they're all about 4 walls, a window and a door, usually not much more.

True vwild1, but how much do digital photos cost? If you think about it, the price per photo goes down the more you take I haven't posted an ad on the property sites (on the opposite side, looking for somewhere myself) but I don't imagine they charge people per picture. It can't be a huge effort to include a picture of all the rooms, and my quick straw poll (the OP, and I - ok, not a good statistical sample) shows that 100% of people looking would be happier to see pics of each room.

I agree. Having read many many posts on this site, it seems everyone looking to move to switzerland checks out the websites first and foremost. I just think you could make a more informed decision with more pics (and knowing how many bedrooms there are but that's another story lol!).

Re: lack of photo's on property ads

We are looking to buy a property at the moment and it always surprises me how bad the quality of photos are on the websites. The classic is when they show a close up of a piece of furniture We're buying the house, not it's contents.

We are also selling our property in Australia and the agent has charged us a fortune to get professional photos taken for the website. It's worth it though, they use all kinds of amazing lenses and photoshop the hell out of it. You look at the photos and wonder why you would want to sell such an amazing place

The bottom line is that you don't have to try very hard to rent or sell a place here in Switzerland. Demand far outweighs supply...so I suppose that's why they don't spend a lot of time and energy on good photos.

Some people don't want the interior of their apartment displayed on the internet. Some companies take photos of an apartment when it is empty and use those when needed. Is it anyone's business what your bed looks like? I always ask for a floor plan, at least to see the room sizes and layout. On the other hand, if the bathroom and kitchen are really old and not a very high standard, for some people this is a deterrent.

Pictures can be very deceiving and the only way to really determine whether a place suits your needs is to visit it.

And in fact, the Swiss housing market being what it is, I could easily see people saying "I don't want to be bothered with that; a couple crappy photos of the kitchen should be enough" and moving the apartment right away regardless....

Yes, it's a sellers' market. Hence lack of photos and general 'weak arm' sales techniques...

Re: lack of photo's on property ads

At least here you do get the occasional floor plan which helps a lot. Plus the full size etc.

In the UK you get crappy descriptions using all the same words. i.e. a template mildly adjusted.

You can automatically translate some words like spacious to mean tiny. Also I wish they would make up their mind what measurements they are going to use over there. At least give both.

I was thinking anyone out there want to start a business teaching Agencies how to take basic photos? Not that I would I'm hopeless with a camera. I see photos with people in it, all their stuff everywhere.

Having at least 4 photos is better than none.

Re: lack of photo's on property ads

2.5 CHF per day for a standard online ad -- more precise information here:
http://www.homegate.ch/docs/preislis...ine_en_513.pdf

I read recently that the owner of Immostreet said that his business is now more profitable than ever -- because houses stay unsold longer than before.

I agree on the quality of photos -- many people here do not bother uncluttering or taking their children out of the room before taking pictures.

What experience has taught me is that sellers tend to only show pictures of features that they are proud of, so if there are several pictures of the kitchen and none of the bedrooms it almost automatically means that the latter are very small.

So it is always best to ask for a floorplan. And I agree -- the only way to really know is to go and visit. Some houses look great on photos but are quite disappointing in real life. And vice versa.
