B Permit holder buying home with 2 flats

I am a US passport holder with a B permit. I found a house that I would like to purchase however I have been informed by a notary that the Swiss law would not allow me to purchase a house that has two flats. I was mentioning this to a colleague of mine, an EU citizen, he tells me that that was never an issue when he bought his house which also had two flats.

Can anyone offer any advice in this regards?

the law is different for CH/EU'ers and the rest! what you describe sounds about right.
