Hombrechtikon - opinions, please.

Hi

I am trying to buy a small house in Hombrechtikon.
Does anybody has/had experience living there ?
We are family with two kids 1 and 14 years old.
Right now we rent in a small, old, reasonably priced apartment in Kusnacht. Being a nice location it definitely does not match my budget for buying anything. Anyway it becoming a getto for the rich..

Please share your experience in Hombrechtikon/ surrounding area

Andrei

Re: Hombrechtikon - opinions, please.

I worked in Hombrechtikon (Hombi) for several years while living in Zurich, so I know it pretty well.

Positives:
- beautiful surrounding countryside, nice little lake (in addition to the Zurichsee) with swimming area with services
- stunning views of the alps
- proximity to Rapperswil which is a real gem of an oldtown plus great shopping (the Manor in Rapperswil is outstanding, especially the grocery store in the bottom floor)
- fabulous mountain biking area, goes on forever, easy bike into Rapperswil
- quick access to skiing
- quick access to lake Zurich, nice swimming area
- a couple of nice decently priced restaurants
- lots of surrounding farms selling fresh produce, milk, honey, fruit, etc.
- big local Stork colony

Negatives:
- main downside: poor public transport into Zurich (either slow S-Bahn or drive to the Forchbahn about 8 km away which takes you to Stadelhofen). Plan on 1 hour each direction into Zurich whether by car or train.
- poor access to public transport, the train station is down by the lake, not in the town, slow S-Bahn connections to Zurich
- really small town, no a whole lot of shops
- I don't know about the tax situation, you can find that out on homegate.ch
- during rush hour travelling over the Seedamm to the other side of the lake is a nightmare if you need to do that for work

All in all, a very nice place to live if you can live with the commute into Zurich.

Re: Hombrechtikon - opinions, please.

For me the biggest issue would be for the teenager to be able to access safe, reliable public transport - soon he/she is going to want to be able to get out and about with friends, and having to 'taxi' everywhere in my experience will be a source of great friction...

And I have to agree, commute through rappi, shocking - a friend just moved in there and she dropped us to the rappi train station around 5pm - it took longer to get down the main street of rappi than to get the 8km from her place to there...

Re: Hombrechtikon - opinions, please.

Depending on where in Hombi you live the public transport is not too bad. I lived near there for a period of time, and if you live on the Wolfhausen side of Hombi its one bus to the Bubikon train station and then S5 to Zurich or Rapperswil. To be honest I found the public transport there comparable with where we live now in Uster.

I second all the good points above, and even if you live on the wrong side of Hombi for the bus to Bubikon you still have the train station in Feldbach, and a bus that will connect you to the the Bubikon bus.

Re: Hombrechtikon - opinions, please.

Thanks a lot for the opinions.
I am considering the house near Tobel bus stop. There are 3 buses, one to Bubikon, other to Feldbach and the third to Stafa. It looks to me very well connected. Bus services are quite frequent and available on Sundays and late evenings as well. The question is : is it really crowded in the bus during the rush hour ?
