Where to live in Basel (3 kids aged 1 to 6)?

Hi, we're thinking of moving to Basel and have never been there before & no idea where to look for a place.
My kids are aged 1, 4 and 6 and the older ones will probably be attending ISB in Aesch.
My workplace is somewhere in the Centralbahnplatz area.

Can I ask for advice on:

1) Is it better for the family to live in the Aesch area, or somewhere near Centralbahnplatz, somewhere in between or somewhere completely different? What are some of the nice neighbourhoods?

2) Is transportation into & out of the city difficult / crowded? Not sure if it makes more sense for me to commute or for my sons to take the tram?

3) We're hoping to get a place with some outdoor space, 4 bedrooms, rental budget around 4000CHF. Is it difficult to find a place to rent which meets those criteria?

4) Are there housing agents who can arrange for viewings of as many potential houses/apartments within a few day period? We might need to do a quick 1 week trip to find a place to live first before bringing the kids over.

Would appreciate any help / advice on this. Thanks!

If you don't mind me asking, having never been in Basel
before... what is your motivation to move to Basel? Do
you have a job lined up in Basel?

You give your location as Basel, where are you now?
PS: Singapore is the IP used for this thread.

Ooops, sorry, did the profile in a rush & wasn't thinking straight.

Yes, I'm currently not staying in Basel. Potential job offer in Basel prompting my many questions. I'm in the process of trying to get a feel of the area & see if things work out..

Public transportation in Basel is excellent. Have a look at the tram system here: http://www.blt.ch/FahrplanundLinienn...m/BLTTram.aspx

For convenience for ISB and into town, the nicest and most convenient will be Münchenstein, probably. But Aesch itself is pretty good. Really, it's the eastern leg of the number 10 and 11 trams that'll be best, in my opinion. It's better for you to commute than your kids.

I'd suggest NOT living in the city.

4000CHF a month should get you a fairly nice house, in a good area. But it's not easy to find a house, or an apartment of appreciable size. It took us 2 months. It has taken others longer.

Does your new employer give you relocation? Most of the big pharmas will put you and your family up for a few months, and give you access to a welcome service who help you find a place to live.

Re: Where to live in Basel (3 kids aged 1 to 6)?

Hello,

I'm in a similar situation. I have 2 kids (age 5 and 2). Also considering a potential move for 2 year period. Not clear yet what the compensation/expat package will be, and we're trying to figure out how much it will need to be for the move to be workable.

Is 4000CHF rental budget middle of road? generous? We would prefer 3 bedrooms w/ at least shared outdoor space, but could live with 2 beds if necessary.

Thanks!

Re: Where to live in Basel (3 kids aged 1 to 6)?

If your kids will be studying in the International school Basel, you are better off staying in Baselland eg. Reinach, alongside tram line 11 route. Pl find a kid friendly house: you don't want neighbours complaining about the noise.

For 1700 CHF pm you should get a 74m2 unfurnished house having 2 bed rooms.

Incidently, I am relocating out of Basel and can pass on the house to you, if you like..
