Is it difficult to find an apartment in Lausanne?

hello, I'm about to move to Lausanne for a new job - it's a three month contract with a possibility to take a permanent position after. Basically, I will be on my own to find a rental for the first three month and will get help from the company if I decided to relocate permanently after the first three months. And I'll be starting quite quickly - 1st June (ish).

I'm wondering how difficult it would be to find a one bedroom fully furnished apartment in Lausanne for three months? I won't have a work permit unless I take the permanent job and I wonder if that's a big obstacle. I've heard that it's very difficult to find accomodation so any insights would be really helpful! I've looked at homegate.ch and some other sites and the rentals seem expensive. I'm in Nice at the moment and you can get a very nice furnished one bed for 1500 CHFa month, but it looks to be more like 2300 CHF in Lausanne. Yikes! Any and all advice appreciated!

Linda

Why not take a flat share for 3 months, which is for you initial contract? That way you do not have to worry about too much.

If you decide to stay and take a permanent job then HR will help you with getting a more permanent residence.

I'm sure you'll be familiar with these, but have a look at www.immoscout.ch and www.homegate.ch. Places are not cheap in Lausanne, but you may also find that competition is incredibly fierce so make sure you are well prepared when you show up with proof of your employment, bank details ect ect so you can move v quickly if you need to. Deposits tend to be 2-3 months rent here, but you take out an insurance policy as an alternative (http://www.swisscaution.ch/en?gclid=...FU8TzAod-w-69Q) Most landlords are happy to accept this, but you may get the odd one who's not too keen.

This is a pretty good idea since a lot of landlords might be put off accepting your application for the flat given your initially short contract.

Re: Is it difficult to find an apartment in Lausanne?

Hi!

It can indeed be a little difficult to find an appartment in Lausanne, it will take some time at least and it means visiting loads of appartments and loads of waiting...

There are however a few temporary appartments which are fully furnished and do not have long waiting lists. My boyfriend stayed in a temporary appartment in the residence Caroline, which cost about CHF 1800 a month.

Otherwise, you could look at the site of Lausanne tourism where they supply a list of herbergements.

Good luck!
