Hi All,

I have recently moved to Baden and I am looking for a flat for myself in or around the town of Baden. The main things I am asking advice on is:

1. What should I expect to pay? I have found flats with 2 rooms at around 970CHF\month which seem reasonable but then a similar one will cost almost 2000CHF\month.

2. Are there any services that people who have moved to Baden have used that could help?

3. Is there any other websites that show flats or shared accomodation other than homegate.ch? I seem to have exhausted all the options on the site.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, all this moving to Switzerland malarky is damn stressful.

That will all depend on location, size, type of building, services, etc. Looking through homegate (as you have done) is the best way to have an idea of prices in the area. Places a bit further from the center of Baden can be cheaper.

Alstom can provide you with names of relocation consultants. We ended up doing it ourselves (the relocation consultant was very busy), but got a German-speaker to call the letting agency to make an appointment. Make sure you have all the required paperwork, so you can apply for a place as soon as you find one you like.

There are sometimes ads on the bulletin boards at the Coop (in the train station) as well as at the Migros on Mellingerstrasse. You should also try looking on the Alstom intranet - they sometimes have ads there as well.

You can visit InfoBaden (Bahnhofplatz 1, just behind the trainstation) and get an infosheet with local rental agencies operating in Baden and nearby towns.

YMMV. Someone who has only been here one day, one week or even maybe a month may not have all the paperwork that landlords expect to see. They will still go for the "easier" tenant if they can and, as we all know, competition for accomodation in the central Baden area can be pretty fierce. Sometimes it pays to have someone who knows their way around, has contacts and can facilitate in getting an apartment. In most cases a good relocation consultant (and there are good and bad ones) will do more than just make phone calls.

I think MAG was lucky. My experience has been that it is not always that easy to find and actually get what one is looking for.
