Vevey or Lausanne??

Hello Everybody!

I am Giulio, italian guy living in Brussels and moving next week to Switzerland for my first time ever (**!!**) , so I was wondering beforehand how are things over-there in the Vaud region and what to expect.

I wiill start working at Nestle (in Vevey) on the 15th of June and I am not sure if its better for me to live in Vevey or in Lausanne or in the middle...
What are your sugestions?

Anybody from this community is working in Lausanne/Vevey region?

After living in big cities in the last years, I am a bit concerned to get trapped in something static, but i hope this is just a stereotype about Switzerland?? ;-) I am single and looking for a nice apartment with balcony...
The best would be to live in the center of Lausanne but for what they are asking for in terms of $$$, maybe its better that I get a place outside Lausanne or in Vevey and I commute by car...
How is the traffic in the peak hours to come and go to Nestle area?

Overall I would appreciate any hints on the accommodation, especially on the area which could be more cool to live. I would like to spend around 2000 CHF and stay in a lively area of the town where there are bars and restaurant but also easy to reach by car or by metro.

Thanks in advance for any tips and have a wonderful day!
Giulio.

ps: I speak fairly decent french as well.

Re: Vevey or Lausanne??

I've only visited Vevey and Lausane once, but I'm sure other members will be along soon to guide you with their local wisdom.
Vevey was deep in snow when I was there but beautiful by the lake. Lausanne was more city-like, with all that that entails I suppose.
Good luck with the change!

Re: Vevey or Lausanne??

Although to live in Vevey is cheaper I would definately recommend Lausanne. There's a lot more happening in Lausanne than Vevey. I lived close to Vevey last year but I spent most my time in Lausanne ...so this year I decided to shift to Lausanne. And I love it...so much more to do.

If you do decide to live in Vevey you will need to have a car as the train Lausanne to Vevey stops at about 12 or 1am.

Re: Vevey or Lausanne??

There are quite a few threads relating to Lausanne and Vevey.

Basically, it comes down to personal preference: City life over the quieter life.

These are just a few of the many threads that you can search for more info.

One of the downsides to Lausanne that has been mentioned on several occasions here is the steep hills.

Re: Vevey or Lausanne??

Ciao Giulio,

My name is Massimo half Belgian, half Italian (28)! I used to live in Brussels for the past 15 years, i am now living in Singapore and I am actually starting an MBA in Lausanne this September. I know quite well Switzerland and some places can be slightly "static"...
I would definitivly recommend you Lausanne if you want something more lively. Particularly the Ouchy area in Lausanne. It is from far the best area to live for a single expat!!
If you like sometimes to have a drink after work or enjoy a couple of wine glass at the restaurant I really would not recommend you to live outside Lausanne. Police control are very frequent in Switzerland and fines extremely expensive (without counting that in the majority of case they just remove you your driving license for a long long period...).
Now, finding an apartment in Lausanne especially in Ouchy can be very difficult and especially if you are not there (and expensive). I would advice you to start renting a serviced apartment studio, see if you like the area and be ready to spend at least 1 month looking for something!

As well if you are interested in co-location (to share costs):
- I will be moving in Lausanne at the end of august and I was actually planning to go there at the end of jully to start looking for an apartment. (Probably in Ouchy)
- My budget is between 1500 - 2000 SF. With this kind of budget you only find tiny apartment in Lausanne, nothing to do with Brussels...! With 3500-4000 you can already find something much better.
- I am 28 and will be studying in Lausanne but probably quite hard as I am making an MBA.
- Single as well, always happy to go for a drink / bite if I dont have a huge case / presentation or exam the day after, I know some people working in Lausanne, Geneva and around as well.
- I won’t probably be there a lot during the week end as luckily I have a place in Verbier
- Ho and I really need to practice my italian! I speak french as well.

Feel free to contact me if you are interested, we can maybe work out something
maxdelord@hotmail.com

Otherwise no worries and good luck in switzerland!!

Cheers
Massimo

Re: Vevey or Lausanne??

I agree with others - if you're used to and looking for a lively city life then Lausanne is your only option. Though Vevey is very nice with a lot going for it (compared to say Montreux) and a reasonable number of bars and restaurants, it's a small town. And there's nothing in between the two that would meet your criteria of a "lively area" - just small, sleepy villages in the vineyards. I wouldn't worry about the traffic for the commute into Nestlé. There's rarely enough traffic volume between Lausanne and Vevey to cause a real headache and you have the choice of either the motorway, the corniche road through the vineyards or the lakeshore route. I should point out that they're planning major roadworks on the autoroute between Lausanne and Vevey this Summer which will cause delays so the lakeshore route or the corniche road will be advisable. And in really bad weather you can always take the 15 minute train ride, though depending on which Nestlé building you're working in (there are several in Vevey), it could be a long walk from the rail station.

Re: Vevey or Lausanne??

I moved from Brussels to the region by myself a year ago. When you move you should get a temporary apartment from Nestlé close to the office. That should give you an idea what its like to live in Vevey.

I was thinking of living in Lausanne however after staying in the temporary apartment I realised that I did not have much time after work to enjoy the evenings. So I decided to get a nice place near Montreux.

Apartments in Lausanne are more expensive, so is parking, and the taxes are higher.

What it comes down to is how often you go out for drinks.

Drop me a message when you arrive and we can meet up for lunch and I can give you some more tips.

Re: Vevey or Lausanne??

Hi,

I think most people have covered the differences between Lausanne and vevey.

the train is a good way to get to work - but it does depend on which buildign you are going to be based in (I think there are 4 or 5 Nestle offices in vevey)

One thing I would point out- most people who work in vevey, have a tendancy to work quite late (not a good thing), so dont go out much during the week..as such some are regretting thier move to Lausanne

Re: Vevey or Lausanne??

Hello,

Thank you very much to everybody.

I finally found something temporary, its a small app. (60m2) for 1990 CHF, so not cheap but a good start as it has got everything in it as it is a sub-letting.

Its in Pré-du-Marché 9B 1004 Lausanne, so i think central.

I was wondering what should I do for my car as this building does not have any speace for the car. I guess Swiss police is quite though, so i'd better be good on that ...

Well I just need to get going now and come down to see beautiful Lausanna!
I will write you more about my impressions.

Thanks again!
Giulio.

Re: Vevey or Lausanne??

I live near Park Milan and have a car space under the Coop supermarket (Cr of Bd de Grancy and Av de Ouchy) - the monthly cost is quite pricey at 215/mth. If you are interested I can give you a contact. Alternativly you can get the sticker for your car to park on the street which I think is around 300/year.

Re: Vevey or Lausanne??

I worked in Vevey before but lived in Montreux because the view is so beautiful, and friendly people. vevey was a bit dull. Lausanne was a car/train ride away for the night outs. To come back to beautiful Montreux was a bliss....

Hi Giulio,

You wouldn't know of any job offers/internships available at Nestle would you? I recently moved to Lausanne and would love to work at Nestle.

Thanks,

Shei
