Catch 22? (Permit vs. accommodation search)

Hello all

I hope you can help me with this problem. My daughter is due to start at dance school in Lausanne this September.

She needs to find a place to live before the start of term - however the school will only allow her to apply for the student residence permit on the first day of term - I am told this will take 6 - 8 weeks to arrive.

When I phoned a rental agency to enquire about a studio today they told me she will be unable to rent a a studio without a student residence permit - but she will not be able to get a residence permit without an address

As she is a dance student, not a university student we have registered with a student letting place, but they say that they are unable to confirm an offer of a studio until mid-August as uni students take priority. This is cutting things a bit fine - especially if they say no.

So how do students get a flat?
Is it common practice for all rental agencies to ask for the student residence permit up front or did I just find the only one in town which asks for this? (she has a letter of acceptance form the school - would this be accepted instead?)
Can anybody recommend some temporary accomodation which wouldn't need a permit and wouldn't cost an arm and a leg for 6-8 weeks?
I can't work out if a visit to Switzerland beforehand would help or not as it seems without a permit nothing can be done - what do you think?

All advice would be greatfully received
Sorry to ask so many questions in one go - really hope someone can shed some light on this for me! (I will be bald by the end of next week from tearing my hair out thinking about it all)

PS the smileys on this site are much cooler than the ones on the sewing forum where I normally reside

Re: Catch 22?

Look for private rooms-to-let from a nice family.

Re: Catch 22?

Hi again,

WG stands for "Wohngemeinschaft" meaning living in a shared apartment. In French I think it is called "colocation".

You can check for rooms here:

in German
http://www.students.ch/wohnen/list
or in French
