furnished or unfurnished - which is more viable?

Hi everyone
We are in Zurich currently staying in a hotel and are looking for an apartment - so far nothing and we've been looking for a week! Having done the sums it seems unfurnished is a much better option and the selection is 10x better!
Is it maybe worth just buying stuff from IKEA as the price difference between furnished and unfurnished is so big? Has anyone done this and what do you recommend?
Thanks
Helene

I think you've answered your own question. Every expat I know initially bought their stuff from Ikea. If you rent furnished, the landlord will probably do the same, or you will be forced to live with some old junk that you can't throw out.

if you consider the extra cost of furnished apartments, you'll break even within six months with a reasonable Ikea run. I did this many years ago and only spent about 3-4000 francs and kitted out a 2-bedroom apartment.

Some of that Ikea stuff lives to this day. Some I've given away to other expats and some simply died

Hi Igorvw,

Don't know about Nyon, but an unfurnished studio in Lausanne costs somewhere between 700-900'ish.

Try looking on:

Best of luck

Yeah, and you had to carry that table up 4 flights of stairs, innit?

Re: furnished or unfurnished - which is more viable?

What utilities, if none mentioned on homegate.ch add, I should assume to find in an unfurnished place? Does unfurnished simply mean an empty, nothing-in flat?
HR lady is looking for a flat for me, since there is still a 3 more months time to my arrival, suggests to have a furnished studio, then go for an apartment. I don't know what she will come up with, but can I stay for one or two months then simply leave?
og, and if it matters, I'll be moving to Lausanne
Thanks,
