Re: apartments in st johann - basel

Hello,

I'm looking for an apartment in Basel and I am considering some places in st johann around voltaplatz/gasstrasse. Since I haven't been there yet (trying to schedule some appointments before the actual visit to Basel), do you have any recommendation regarding that area? I read from previous posts mixed reviews.

Thanks!
Francesca
St Johann and Voltplatz are not so nice. You don't have to live right near work to get to work. I used to live in Marktplatz and that was wonderful. A lot of people like Kanenfeld which is close to Novartis. The tram system is good so you will be able to link up with the No 11 tram that goes up to Novartis.

Re: Best area to live in Basel?

Riehen is a nice and quite area to live, but not really cheap though.
It takes you approx. 10 - 15 minutes by public transport to get to Kleinbasel.

I've merged a few "where to live in Basel" threads together, as this is a question that's coming up more frequently these days. And I remember the days when I was one of the few Basel people on here, nice to see more interest in the place
Well, Basel is where I'm headed and I'm looking forward to it. have visited often but that's different to living isn't it! Luckily have friends who can help with various bits of information and otherthings but really glad of all the info on EF. Thanks to all.

Pam, when you have settled on an area, would you mind posting a brief "review" of it for the benefit of us other newcomers?

Re: Best area to live in Basel?

I can certainly do that. I've just been trawling websites tonight...seem to keep ending up in Klein Basel and not sure that's where I really want to go!

Will be so much easier if my friends come up with something for me, it's all so confusing from this end!

Re: Best area to live in Basel?

In case you have children, & you are planning to send them in Swiss Schooling, then it's better to see the distance between the school and your house as here in CH, children have to come home for lunch and go back again to attend afternoon school.
One more point worth to be considered -- there is always a debate about the standard of Gross Basel schools and Klein-Basel schools!

Re: Best area to live in Basel?

I moved to Basel in May, but still commute to Zurich everyday. Originally we wanted a place next to the SBB for commuting reasons, but at the time couldn't find a flat we wanted. The one we preferred in that area only had an open apartment on the ground floor and I wasn't really a fan of that. We ended up finding one about 3 km away from the SBB, on the boarder to France that was just as expensive, but about 20 m2 larger, had a much bigger balcony, and was on the top floor. Personally speaking, I don't mind the extra commute since I enjoy my flat so much. Besides, Basel is a great city to own a bike, so it's easy to get around wherever you are.

I am not so familiar with Klein Basel much past the river. The areas right up to the river though seem to have a bit of a "party central" type feel to me when I've been over that way.

Cleaner and not so smelly as pre-Katrina New Orleans but something of a similar feel (including "soiled doves" in some areas).

Re: Best area to live in Basel?

Gellert and Bruderholz are the nicest areas of the City -big apartments, green areas-, but note that they are also more expensive.

And public transport is pretty limited in the latter.

One of the "wisdom pearls" you will see / hear is that living outside of Basel is cheaper in terms of taxes and health care, the trade off being that rent is potentially higher. So potentially live in Basel-Land is less expensive than Basel-Stadt.
When we looked for a 2.5/3-room flat for my wife, we found that the difference in rent between Allschwil and the bordering areas of Basel-Stadt were roughly offset by the difference in health insurance. The tax difference would be the savings, then.

I'm reviving this old thread because this piqued my interest - are Gross Basel schools considered better, on average, than Klein-Basel schools?

And does anyone have feedback on Im Surinam or areas around there?
Thank you.

Re: Best area to live in Basel?

I've heard said that Basel is kind of industrial but it seems pretty to me on Google images. So is it pretty or is it industrial? Or is it a mixture?

Obviously, I'll have to be content to go where I can get work, but I have some degree of French and German, so considering the proximity to both these fine countries, I thought Basel might be a good possibility.

So is it pretty?

There's only an industrial section of the city near the harbor. Other than that the city and its surroundings is extremely beautiful.

Ah thank you! My husband, silly man, had it in his head that it is an industrial place and wouldn't look for jobs there. Last time I listen to him! Was just reading up on it...it sounds fab being situated beside France and Germany. That sounds pretty good to me

Thanks for the reassurance...photos on the web can only get you so far.

Re: Best area to live in Basel?

Wow there is a plethora of info on here! One other question to add into the mix. If you have kids who are going to most likely be attending the ISB (at least for a year and then maybe into the swiss schools) where would you recommend living? Three kids in a small apartment is not really going to work so I figure we have to move out to Basel-Land.

So the tax is cheaper out there but off set by the private insurance?

Re: Best area to live in Basel?

Riehen is the wrong end of Basel for the ISB.

Look for the nearest tram and bus stations to the ISB. Then live somewhere where the kids can get to that stop relatively easy. Most (all?) areas along the number 10 and 11 lines (in BL) are nice places.

Can't answer the question directly, but whenever I speak to the locals they nearly all say that schools in BL are better than in BS...
