Re: Best area to live in Basel?

Hi all

I am currently contemplating a move to Basel but am confused whether to move to Basel Stadt or Basel Land.

I prefer Basel Stadt but Basel Land looks attractive due to lower taxes. Have also heard that Basel Stadt reduced taxes and now there is not much of a diff really.

In Basel Land, I am considering Binningen, Bottmingen,Allschwil and Birsfelden and probably Muttenz,Munchenstein,Oberwil,Therwil and Reinach.

Can you tell me if these communities in Basel Land are higher or lower in taxes compared to Basel Stadt after Basel Stadt reduced the taxes ?

Regards

Those are probably the best places to live around Basel - except Birsfelden- , without actually being in the city. In my view, the quality of life is better a little out from Basel. You missed Arlesheim of your list.

Re: Best area to live in Basel?

Avoid Allschwil, the noise from the airport blights it.
If they are not taking off, they are landing.
The maintenance workshops seem to start work at 5am and run the jet engines up from then on, and if the wind's blowing the right way it's very clear.

Re: Best area to live in Basel?

My vote's also for Riehen, but readers should keep in mind that everyone has personal reasons for their likes/dislikes.

I love hiking and have two dogs, and for this Riehen is wonderful. We've been here 2 months and I've still got a whole bunch of routes to explore. It's such a popular passtime in the area that some local organization (maybe the city government, but I can't remember) publishes a map of walking/hiking paths which is sent to new residents for free. I also love how close the German grocery stores are to where we live.

We have no children so distance to any school is not an issue. And coming from the US where we had 45 minute commutes means we don't care if we have to travel 30-45 minutes to reach the different parts of Basel. Walking and tram-riding sure beats sitting in a car on a US freeway!

On the other hand, some of my friends would hate living in Riehen as none of the things I see as advantages appeal to them. I have one friend who likes to go out several times a week so he moved to Hammerstrasse to be close to bars, and others who live in the city because they can't fathom having more than a 15 minute commute to their job or anything else for that matter.

Perhaps the best way is to find a few people who like to live lifestyles similar to yours, and ask them for their opinion. Also, FYI, when we researched the tax issues for the few areas we liked the difference came out to no more than 1,000 CHF per year, which wasn't going to keep us from living where we liked it best.

Re: Best area to live in Basel?

I agree about the tax issue - it wouldn't be my primary method of selection (what about France) as other issues like extra travel and things will offset money benefits and will effect your daily life more.

If you like a little suburban style then go for BL. Personally I like the small size of the city and proximity to town and so live in BS.

Re: Best area to live in Basel?

I was under the impression that the tax rate in BS had changed recently and living in BS or BL no longer makes too much difference to your taxes. Am I wrong?

For people with kids, BL might be better as I have heard BL schools are better than BS.

Re: Best area to live in Basel?

I've just got my first payslip. Wow, deduction-o-rama. Not that it matters as I don't actually have any of the money yet as I'm still waiting for my bank account to be opened.

Anyway ... I asked for calculations showing the difference between living in BL versus BS and the difference is around 0.9%. If I factor in the cost of re-registering (I registered in BS based on the location of my aparthotel) then the savings for moving out are very little.

But BL has a wide range of tax rates... at least, it did last time I troubled to look...

Re: Best area to live in Basel?

hmm - I asked about "Basel Land" as I didn't realise it varied, and I got a reply from our payroll company with a percentage in it. Maybe they picked a place at random!

Re: Best area to live in Basel?

OK, Credit Suisse tax calculator: 100'000 per year, single, no kids, no religion

Basel - 26'641
Binningen (BL) - 19'942
Muttenz (BL) - 21'093

Married with two kids:

Basel - 25'671
Binningen - 10'689
Muttenz - 11'272

So, mostly, it depends on your situation and there's little generalisation.

Re: Best area to live in Basel?

Quite a difference. Seems my payroll department either isn't clued up or, more likely, wasn't sure how to answer my question as I didn't ask it properly

Interesting that, according to those figures, I'd save over 6,000CHF moving to Binningen.

We move over in April and were weighing up BL versus BS. I'm married with 1 kid so it looks like BL would be a major saving!!!

Re: Best area to live in Basel?

Hi
I am moving to Basel as a single mum with my 3 year old son. I will be working for Novartis and he will be going to kindergarden on Erlentor Strasse. I would appreciate any recommendations of places to live in Basel Land (due to the lower tax situation). I don't want a logistical nightmare when I get there as I have that in the UK and need a change. An easy journey to nursery and then work would be great!

Can anybody out there help?

Re: Best area to live in Basel?

Which Novartis building will you be in?
By far the easiest way to get around is by bike or tram.

The above numbers hold good if you are on a C Permit or a Swiss citizen. For all L or B permit holders, the witholding tax numbers on a annual salary of 1,00,000 are as under:

Basel Stadt - 14,817 CHF
Basel Land - 12,518 CHF
(Binningen & Muttenz are in Basel Land)

Married with two kids:
Basel Stadt - 5548 CHF
Basel Land - 3342 CHF

The source of the above nos is Comparis Tax calculator(http://www.comparis.ch/steuern/quell...lensteuer.aspx). I have used it for my calculations & have always found it accurate.

Re: Best area to live in Basel?

Comparis is what I used when I deduced the difference was small.

It seems that the withholding tax is much less than the "real" tax amount if one fills in a tax return. I would have thought it'd be the other way around. Now, I hope I dont get sent a tax return
