Response regarding applications ~ Aparment rentals

Does anyone know how long it will take for a response to be given after sending in an application for an apartment? Apart from calling up work references and others, does the Verwaltung have to do a police check too? If so, how long does this usually take?

Also is it really important to attach an original copy of the Betriebungsauskunft? Its a nightmare to people like me who want to apply for multiple apartments!!!

It'll take anywhere from one day to 3 weeks, and only a photocopy of the Betriebungsauskunft is sufficient ( they might want to have sight of the original though ). Not sure of the police check - never had to do it. Do remember to include a copy of the rental guarantee from your support organisation as well as a ( copy of the ) reference letter from them - it helps a lot.

Never heard of the police check, either. They sometimes call references. Any apartment I've ever had, I had an answer within the week at the latest.
One thing I find works really well when applying for an apartment - especially if there's lots of people interested, is to write a letter accompanying your "application". I try to explain briefly why a given apartment really would be perfect for me and why I would fit in with other tenants.
Oh, and what's always good is to get your application in first. A lot of agencies do first come, first served.
If you really really want the place, call to ask questions, if they don't provide an email address you can use to submit the papers, ask if that might be an option, otherwise fax it. But in either case, send the papers by regular mail and follow up with a phone call the day after they should've received mail

We have been attaching a covering letter to the applications cos it definitely helps in terms of establishing the interest factor. Thanks for the tips in terms of sending in the applications fast and following it up with a call!
