Any first time entrant succeeded in renting an apartment through general viewing?

Hi All,

Landed in Zurich about a couple of weeks back and started on the all too daunting home search. As expected, visited a number of houses without success. My question to all is,

Has anyone, who has come to Suisse for the first time, succeeded in getting an apartment through the general viewing when close 20/30 people visit the flat within an hour? Especially, if you belong to any Asian country and don't speak any German?

This way I'd know if there is any point in going for general viewing or am wasting my time.

Appreciate your responses.

Re: Any first time entrant succeeded in renting an apartment through general viewing?

In my opinion it's better than not going, but it will almost always be a frustrating and fruitless process. Housing in Zurich is incredibly tight and Swiss nationals generally receive preference in applications. Because an apartment might receive 20-100 applicants (one I applied to received 250), it is very hard too distinguish yourself in general, and not being Swiss just makes it more difficult.

Try to do what you can to avoid being part of the general pool. Be sure to speak directly to the owner/agent, send flowers (I know people for whom this has worked), drop your application off in person.

It is tough and frustrating, but you will get through it. It just takes persistence!

- General viewing with up to 20/30 people at a time......for a flat in Zurich.....is normal.

-Not been able to speak German. Certainly a communication problem. Wouldn't reccommend signing anything.

-Coming from an Asian Country? Cant see why you are playing the Race Card on that one.

Good Luck.

Are you coming in as a student, or for work?

From what I see, it is very very difficult to find a house as an individual "alien". (I'm in the same position as you are, asian and doesn't speak German... ) But I don't see why being Asian is a factor.

Re: Any first time entrant succeeded in renting an apartment through general viewing?

Whenever I applied for an apartment I always attached a picture of myself and my daughter on it. One company even sent the picture back to me saying it wasn't necessary to include one but at the same time they gave me the apartment so obviously it didn't hurt.

I did not intend to play the race card, but it is just that an average Swiss would have interacted with German, French or Italian many times during his life time but not with many asians. So it might just be comforting for him/her to know that the tenant is European/American.
