No closets -- where do you hang the clothes?

I have heard that there are little to no closets in most apt/houses, mainly in the bedrooms... how accurate is this?

If there are no closets in the bedroms, what do people use... armoires? They don't really hold a lot of hanging stuff in my opinion. Is there some type of make-shift closet that people buy and use?

Looking forward to feedbac. I know many think we overconsume in the US but wow, I cannot imagine not having a closet to hang clothes...

Yep, you can buy freestanding ones from Migros, Coop, Ikea etc. I have one of those and one big heavy wooden armoire.

They're not makeshift closets, really, any more than a shelf is a makeshift cabinet... but I know what you mean. For the first few months I felt like a bit of a clothing exhibitionist every time I had company over.

Re: No closets -- where do you hang the clothes?

To answer your first question, almost none of the apartments or houses in Switzerland have closets built in -- even in new construction. It simply isn't the way they build houses over here.

Most people use free-standing wardrobes for their clothes. It's worth pointing out that these are typically much bigger than traditional armoires, as I think that when most Americans think of armoires, they think of something much smaller. To get an idea, have a look at these wardrobes.

I thought everybody put their clothes on the floor in piles!

-clean
-still enough clean to wear
-little bit smelly
-dirty

I don't think I've ever been in a place here that does not have some form of storage, normally in the hall or corridor.

I'm sure that even in the captial of the world there are shops that sell wardrobes, certainly Europe abounds with them, and the backwater idyll that is Switzerland even has a few. Due to the fact that earnings are a high enough to interfere with traffic from Zurich aiport, many just dispose of there dirty clothes and buy new. This approach has many ecological benefits, as it avoids beastly detergents getting into the water system, keeps third world children employed, and many of the wealthy suitably fashionable

Storage space is precious. If you had a closet why would you waste it on clothes:

Seriously... why the heck would they do that? If you couldn't use them than what did you do -- go out and get new ones?

Nah, we just used them anyway. Buggered if I was buying wardrobes when they were there already.

Re: No closets -- where do you hang the clothes?

everyone in the family has an armoire in their respective rooms.
from my experience this is what is done thru out europe. closets don't generally exist here.

really, it isn't so bad and we just had friends over for a "let's put together the giant armoire and organizer from ikea" party and it was a blast! drinks, food, drills, hammers and a lot of laughs!!!

it's the only way!

Can I hire your friends? Actually, does Ikea deliver in Zurich? Those closet wardrobes look huge and I know not many people drive around trucks with a flat bed like they do in the States.

LOL we have the same idea (this way at least it gets used), or throw the clothes on the side of the bath.

On clothes racks - one of the ones I have has little wheels on it, like you'd see in a clothes shop. I've survived 2 years now without a wardrobe, although the bedroom door has to be tightly shut whenever there's anyone other than me at home . My apartment only has storage space in the kitchen, when I moved in I entertained grand notions of getting one of those nice big wardrobes from ikea with the sliding doors and lots of drawers. But I could never pick one..too big a decision ... I like to think the lack of wardrobe space has contributed to me buying less...here's hoping anyway

If they were built in, there is no way the landlord can stop you from using what is in the premises you are renting. I would have told him to rip them out so you have room for your own wardrobes.

I call it a "wardrobe" normally. Just didn't want to confuse anyone on here, as I know some of ye also call proper closets that.
