Oil central heating vs electric heating

Hi I have oil central heating in my Chalet and it is quite old and I have a horrible feeling that I might have to replace it in a year or so. The tank and the system take up quite alot of space in the basement and it is a real waste of space. We were thinking of changing to an electric system which we thought would not take up so much room and we could renovate the basement to make another bedroom. I know I have to ask the commune if we can have electric heating.
Has anyone every put in electric heating and was it expensive to install and run. Did the boiler take up much room? any info of experiences would be great
Thanks

Re: Oil central heating vs electric heating

Electric heating has to be the most expensive heating systems to date. Unless your home is perfectly insulated and you have humidifiers somewhere, you may be sorry you converted.
You mean electric radiators?
There are so many different systems, heat pumps are far more economical.

Do you mean water-filled radiators with an electric immersion heater or something else?

Where is your chalet located? Town doesn't matter just the elevation and does it see much sun in the winter months?

Hi Swinburne
Did you ever come to a conclusion on this? We have the same problem in our house - it's got an oil boiler that uses masses of space (and smells) and I want to convert the room to an office.
Any info you have would be much appreciated, thanks!
