Has anyone got any tips for renting in Winterthur?

Hi alll,

Can anyone share their experience re renting in Winterthur? Living in the centre or in a house further out?

Also - since we are considering putting the children in the ISW, where do most people who have their children there live? Not being nosy just want to have a nice network of friends for after school play dates and the like.
Where we are at the moment all my son's friends live within a few minutes' walk and it does make it so much easier for parents and children alike.

Thanks.

Re: Has anyone got any comments re renting / living in Winterthur?

I know it's been a while since I posted this and I guess none of the EF crowd live in Winterthur.... or nearby?

I am a little concerned by this to be honest as innitially we were told it's a very international city so ANY comments would relly help- I have changed a little the title of the thread as I guess it read too litteral.

We will have a relocation agent, I hope, for the practical part but I guess I just wanted to get a "feel" for the place from fellow expats.

Thank you!

Re: Has anyone got any tips for renting in Winterthur?

Hi Zoro, I have no answers but would also be interested in the responses

Winterthur is one of the areas we would be considering ( we will be in Schaffhausen in a couple of weeks but worried it might be too small).

We have a 3 year old and I am quite keen to use local kindys / schools when the time comes. (Language and integration reasons mainly I guess).

Ideally we'd like to rent a house with a bit of a garden, after reading some posts about strict apartment rules I'm worried that my lovable but extremely boisterous bundle of joy will upset the neighbours!

If you do get some insights please pm me. Good luck!

Re: Has anyone got any tips for renting in Winterthur?

Hello, I actually live in Winterthur (Winti) and have done for 2 years. I cant tell you about schools etc but it is quite international, there is an English speaking club and Im sure you could find info here....
http://www.internationalclub.ch/en/l...r/children.php

I live just outside the city 7min bike ride to the station, approc 5-6 trains per hour to Zurich, 23 mins is the fastest, though Im looking at moving back to Zurich I would recommend Winti anytime, it is wonderful in summer, they have so many events/festival in the old town, plenty of restaurants, bars, just great sitting outside enjoying the atmosphere...
Hope this little info helps...

Regards
Gazzy

Re: Has anyone got any comments re renting / living in Winterthur?

I moved to Winterthur in Sep '09 and I can say that it is not very international but there is a good number of English speaking people who live here. I see that in general, families with kids are living outside the city, for example, Oberwinterthur, Oberseen, Wülfingen, Hegi etc. There are good places in town but more expensive. Also, considering that the city is not that big it should be easy to commute to the main station or city center. For instance, one of my colleagues relocated from Mexico with his wife and daughter and they live in Oberwinterthur and his daughter goes to the ISW and another colleague moved last month with his family from the States and they have found a place somewhere in between the city and Wülfingen.

The International Club Winterthur is a good place to start. I had joined the club recently and seems to be pretty good. You can drop in for one of their regular meetups to get some more information. http://www.internationalclub.ch/en/activities/index.php

Re: Has anyone got any tips for renting in Winterthur?

This is really good - thanks !

Yes, we should consider the impact of our sometimes-shoutty-boys on the neighbours. We are used with space and very forgiving people living next door.... so maybe a house would be best.

Oberwinterthur looks (what did we do before street view???) a bit new and unfinished - is that really the case?

ISW is a strong contendent on our list for schools, it has got good reviews on this forum and otherwebsites. Will make an appointment to visit in the comming weeks.

Re: Has anyone got any tips for renting in Winterthur?

Oberwinterthur has bit new apartments and buildings. But there are some new buildings/contructions in other suburbs too. It would be better to consult a real estate agent to get better idea. Have you guys browsed through homegate.ch and found anything interesting?
