Good places to live near ICS, moving with 3 boys

Hello,

I would really like some pointers if anyone can help. We are moving in July to Zurich with our 3 boys (ages 6,8 & 10). My husband will be working in the center of Zurich & we are hoping to get the boys into ICS.

Where is a good place to live with good commutes to both school & work ? We would like low rents with lots of space (I know I am dreaming a bit) and importantly a good english speaking community ? and the icing on the cake would be a good football team. We will be tax-equalised with the USA, so living in a low tax area is not a priority.

Any advise appreciated.
Rachel.

"low rent" is all relative...

for a 4-5 room apartment (3 bedrooms) around 100 - 120 square metres, you can expect to pay 2500+ chf per month...within zone 10 or a short distance. That's basic living...

If you are happy to drive, the obvious choices around the ICS would be Zumikon, Zollikon, and down the lake...

We are in Witikon and really enjoy it, but there are not many houses. Most people live in apartments...that's a lifestyle adjustment thing.

Friends of mine are moving out from an enormous duplex house in Dolder - 7500chf a month...beautiful three levels, security building, private lift, enormous entertaining, and right on the forest but a short travel to town...

Low rent is definitely not what comes to mind when I think of areas near ICS. For families who are used to a lot of space, and living in a house back in their home country, adjusting to life in an apartment, particularly sharing a washer/dryer, these are difficult things to get one's head around.
By the way, 1000 square feet is the equivalent of approximately 92m2.
A decent amount of space in the ICS area for a family of 5 cannot be found for 2,500chf per month.

It all depends how you define 'decent' and 'liveable'...

I am amazed at how people don't adapt to apartment living...I grew up in a 6 bedroom, two storey house with three bathrooms, laundry, enormous 'rumpus' room and separate formal dining and living rooms, double garage, triple car driveway and front and backyards...

But I have no problem living in a three bedroom 120 square metre apartment, 5.5 rooms...old, with shared laundry and "OMG'" washing roster with 10 days in between and 3 days to wash, one of which is often a sunday when I am not supposed to wash...with three children...

Does this make me 'exceptional'

I would have to say that you are "exceptional".

Re: Good places to live near ICS, moving with 3 boys

I shall take that as a compliment I guess we are 'exceptional' anyway - 23 hours on an airplane, one way, with three kids...sight unseen...to a country where they 'don't speak English'....knowing no-one...

Re: Good places to live near ICS, moving with 3 boys

Hi! We have two kids at ICS and live in Witikon. Thumbs up to both of those places!

I suggest that you look in Ebmatingen, Maur, Uster (anywhere in or around the Griefensee), or further along the S18, called the Forchbahn, to Forch, Egg and beyond. All lovely places, just a little bit further to Zurich, but, usually, with very good transport into Zurich and very close, ie, 5-20 minutes away, from ICS.

We just moved to Witikon from Erlenbach. The "Gold Coast", ie, Zollikon, Kusnacht, Erlenbach, Herrliberg, is lovely, lovely, lovely, but super-duper pricey. Those towns are on the Zurichsee, Lake Zurich; the towns I mentioned are along or behind the hill which houses Zumikon and ICS.

Please feel free to send me a private message. Happy to help out.

The op says they are prepared to pay 4K per month. I think it is still possible to find a nice place for that price not too far from ICS.
By the way, we moved to Zurich from Dallas where we had a HUGE house. Our first place in Zurich was a three BR apartment (100 SQM). It was hell to get used to it for the first few months but now after several years we think we were blessed to get out of Texas
