Security deposit insurance ... options?

After just 6 weeks in Zurich we have found an apartment we love and have the contract ready to go but need to sort out the security deposit which is around 6,000 CHF.

We have discovered a product from Zurich Insurance called HEV security deposit insurance where by you pay a premium for Zurich to cover this cost for you.

What we like about this option is that we don't have to outlay the 6,000 now.

Has anyone has any experience with this Zurich product or can recommend one?

Many thanks

This is what we use, never had a problem, landlady was fine with it. Although they don't have to accept it, so sound out the landlord first otherwise it could act as a black mark against you.

There was a recent article in the HEV magazine (Aargau edition) about the various options. There are 3 companies offering something.

The HEV/Zürich insurance is one option but the annual premium is higher than with this company, whether you select the option of adding liability insurance or not.

All the websites have a calculator function so you can work out the annual premium. Swiss Caution has a registration fee and the annual premium is higher than with the HEV/Zürich.

Re: Security deposit insurance ... options?

Hello.

There seems to be a new provider on the market which we have been recommended by our relocation agent: First Caution (www.firstcaution.ch).

Based on the deposit/rental guarantee that we will need to pay (CHF 8145 ), First Caution seems considerably cheaper than Swiss Caution:

SC: Registration premium of CHF 231 (covers rental guarantee until 31.12.10) and annual premium of CHF 448.60 thereafter.

FC: Registration premium of CHF 103.90 and annual premium of CHF 142.55.

Whilst in the grand scheme of a relocation a few CHFs doesn't go far, and it may be that the standard of service from SC is worth the extra, but the difference in price could pay for a few official bin bags .

Does anyone have any experience of First Caution?

Thanks

Re: Security deposit insurance ... options?

Congratulations on finding the apartment OP. Here is a thread I started some time back re security deposit insurance when I was wet behind the ears to this country. Hopefully, you will find useful information on there.

Security deposit insurance

My previous apartment didnt allow that, and I have lost a couple of apartments that way. I wised up (well got desperate) in the end and grudgingly coughed up money for the security deposit.

However, I am using Swisskaution on my current one. In fact, the rental agency works with swisskaution and asked if I would like them to take care of it for me when they informed me that I was successful in my apartment application. Hence, like what bigblue said, it all really depends on the landlord /agency. I would ask them how open they are to the option.
