How did you find your apartment/house in Switzerland?

As it can cost quite a bit of money to advertise in Switzerland, I'm doing a bit of research to figure out the most effective way to market our house. Should we put an ad in the newspaper or online (which website did you use)?

I would really appreciate hearing about how you found your apartment/house. Am I missing something?

Thanks!

If it is a nice house, you might consider contacting the local international companies and seeing if they have relocation services that might be interested in using the house.

Re: How did you find your apartment/house in Switzerland?

My vote and information won't be much good I'm afraid as our search was in the good old days before Internet and long before the English Forum was thought of. Mr. L was commuting weekly from England, saw the flat in the Newspaper, had a look at it, found it OK, the price OK, the location OK, arranged the financing to buy it and signed on the dotted line. I first saw it when the rest of us moved back to Switzerland.

I used www.homegate.ch.

Looked at 2 places on there and took the first one I saw having heard all the nightmare stories of people struggling to find decent accommodation. All worked out fine.

Re: How did you find your apartment/house in Switzerland?

Tell everyone you know you're looking for a place. If you like an area then move there (even if less than perfect). It's easier to find a place if you already live in the area. Avoid the big cities (Winterthur is better if you want a bit of green). I never liked agencies. The worst house on the block was always the one that was going. Good luck. Switzerland is not easy I'm afraid

Re: How did you find your apartment/house in Switzerland?

The guy who was moving out used a company called max-immo to put it on Homegate for him ... for which they charged me 25% of a month's rent.

Not too bad a deal for him, butI was just lucky and found it on home gate the morning they posted it, so was first in line.

Renting - but feel free to answer even if you bought your place.

Thanks!

Re: How did you find your apartment/house in Switzerland?

When I bought my appt I spoke to everyone I could who lived in the area and looked at several places. I spoke to a cleaner who told me that the place she looked after was for sale although it was being let out for 6 months. She gave me the keys to have a viewing and that was it. After the tenancy was completed I moved in

Many thanks for your responses!

It looks like posting an ad on the internet is definitely the way to go. Homegate seems to be the best option for our region.

Re: How did you find your apartment/house in Switzerland?

I'm desperately looking to buy and always use homegate etc to see what's available.
Found a super house this week - near perfect! Just one drawback , the owners are building a new house so will not move out until April 2011. This is the deal - they are prepared to sell but want to stay in the house as a tenant and pay rent until next April!! WTF!!
How bizarre is that.
I want to buy a house not a bloody tenant. Clearly there are advantages for them but as a buyer I see nothing in it for me even though the house is fantastic.
Frustrated just does not describe my feelings right now.GGGRRRRR!!

Go for it! Since everything is so great im sure you can put up with some tenants until then. Hopefully of course they wont leave the house in ruins

Re: How did you find your apartment/house in Switzerland?

After hearing all of the horror stories of 50-60 people queuing up to look at homes, and experiencing some of that ourselves, we just got lucky and snagged the perfect 7.5 room home in the Rotkreuz area for our family. Took a look at a posting that had just gone up on the announcement cork board of the international school we were investigating, jotted down the info, called that afternoon, and that was that.

Great timing, as we found out in the next couple of days the owner was flooded with calls--and they hadn't yet even put it on homegate. It pays to be first and friendly :-) We move in on Aug 1.

Re: How did you find your apartment/house in Switzerland?

My relocation agent emailed me saying that she found me a flat. First time i saw it it was after signing the contract. Ok not the very best thing to do but the flat is really nice so i was really lucky in this sense

Re: How did you find your apartment/house in Switzerland?

We moved here pre-Homegate days, and used a relocation agent.

Given that I needed a house with garden for my dogs, spoke no German, and had 3 days to find suitable accomodation I could not have found a house on my own.

In fact, were I to do it all over again. even with good German I think I would still use a relo agent when searching for rental housing. The supply is so limited, especially for Auslanders, families with children, people with pets, or those in need of a garden, that any 'inside' help one can get is worth the price.

When we bought our house, I found the listing on Homegate.

Now that we are looking to sell this house and buy elsewhere, I am questioning whether an Immo agent is worth the outrageous commissions they demand. (I've interviewed two and was... underwhelmed... to say the least.) I may list the home myself, and engage a lawyer to handle the sales contract.

In looking for our next home, I regularly trawl through Homegate and the Kantonal Bank(s) site.

Re: How did you find your apartment/house in Switzerland?

Don't waste your money on Max-Immo - 2 weeks advertising on homegate costs about SFr130; we did it recently and got loads of responses. The site is also in English and entering an ad was dead easy. The only thing is to know the "keywords" are in German for an apartment ad and how people phrase things - but you can figure it out if you look at other ads on there.

Also, if you see a place advertised through MaxImmo on homegate, try Googling for something unique in the ad - e.g. the monthly rent and location (MaxImmo never put the precise address on as they want you to pay them before you can see the apartment). Often you will find the same place advertised elsewhere with all details and contact info for the actual owner etc. We did just this and saved ourselves a packet.
