UK to Swiss Move - moving quote/companies?

Moving from Midlands to Zug area in the summer and currently looking at the different options, in particular reputable moving firms... Moving 3bed house but not full furnishings...mainly boxes plus beds and sofas.

Had the first quote from packimpex for 7500CHF for just moving 10,000CHF full packing...is this standard cost to expect? It seemed a little steep.

Any good suggestions for moving firms to look for? I'm having quotes from Pickfords and Luker Bros...anyone else I should be thinking of?

We're paying for the majority of the costs ourselves , no luxury firm subsidy on this move!

The last threads I can find on this were started in 2006 and only offer odd updates in the past year - would appreciated some advice on how much to expect to pay and peoples recent experiences.

Cheers

Re: UK to Swiss Move - moving quote/companies?

Hi Stooby68

That quote probably sounds about right.
We moved our two bedroom flat contents from London to Zurich last year and paid between 5 and 6000 I think.

We went with Pickfords, and to cut a long story shot, wouldn't recommend them as they "forgot" half of our stuff, which they only realised when the van turned up here. We waited another two weeks for the rest.

Anyway, i would bet that others have had good experiences with them so it's a good idea to get a few quotes on the go and see what you think.

It can be a bit of a gamble but you'll probably get a few folk on here bigging up some but not others.

Good luck

We went with Baxters, and they were brilliant. Really good. But I can't tell you the price as it was paid for me by my new employer.

We used Interdean http://www.interdean.com/

Not sure of the cost but very professional they even watered our plants on route. Good luck with the move.

Re: UK to Swiss Move - moving quote/companies?

We used Abels, very good, very efficient. We packed ourselves (3 bed house) although in honesty it didn't save much cost. They provided all packing materials in good time too.

The guys they sent were very polite and just got on with the job in hand. Abels helped and advised us with the importation issues of our goods including UK car and dealt with everything at the border.

We paid about 3,500 I think.

We had some crazy quotes, so just keep looking. Good luck with the move!

Try 'France Removals' for a good value quote with prompt service.

I used France removals from London to Arth and all went well and they delivered next day, great prices too

I saw they advertise here too so give them a call (google it). I had no problems and the guys worked really hard and were very helpful and friendly. Good luck!

Re: UK to Swiss Move - moving quote/companies?

We used European Van Lines from south london to Zug. They were reasonably priced, but someone apparently cancelled, so our stuff was delayed a couple of weeks while they filled the rest of the load.

We were paying for the move (asked for more salary instead - better deal IMO when you get that paid every year) and we left all furniture and appliances behind and rented our place out fully furnished. Buying everything again here was worth it instead of paying to move it. Our flat here was way bigger than our place in london - so king sized bed and an 8+ seater dining table were needed to fill the void.

Re: UK to Swiss Move - moving quote/companies?

hey Stooby68

I just shipped a small amount of stuff over using Dynamic International (http://www.dynamic-intl.com/international_removals.php). they were extremely helpful, got me a quote 20 minutes after i emailed them, and arranged for me to drop my stuff off at one of their offices because I was doing it all at very short notice. I did the packing myself, but I think they do offer a complete removals service.

I had 1.3 cubic metres in total, which they loaded onto a shipping pallet, and secured everything so it couldn't move in transit. It was collected and delivered within about 10 days, which could have been quicker if I had arranged delivery with the local haulier sooner. I paid 400 in total (this is a small shipment, so I can't comment on how that will relate to your shipment).

I can't recommend these guys highly enough - they were super efficient, very service oriented even with a small shipment like mine, and looked after my stuff well. They can help with customs clearance too, although I had already done my paperwork myself (it's very easy with the right documentation - all detailed on the Swiss customs website in English).

Good luck with the move!

Re: UK to Swiss Move - moving quote/companies?

I have used LB twice. The first time fantastic service everything went great. Second time there was lots of damage done to our furniture some of which the movers tired to hide then we found the insurance they recommended did not cover us fully. After the firt move I would not have hesitated to recommend them after the second I would not recommend them at all.

Re: UK to Swiss Move - moving quote/companies?

Thanks for all your ideas - I'll follow some of those up. 5 Years ago we used Luker Bros from Switzerland to UK and were very impressed but I've also read a lot of horror stories since then.

I've not heard of France Removals before - they seem an interesting bet as do dynamic international...

So here's another question: has anyone moved themselves and how does it work with customs etc..? Is it as much hassle as it sounds?!

Cheers for all your feedback so far - much appreciated

Re: UK to Swiss Move - moving quote/companies?

My info's two years old now, but we moved over in March 2008 using Britannia for well under 4k. That was for a full pack and move on a large 4-bed house, with a bazillion boxes of books and a complicated garage full of tools and engineeringy bits.

The whole thing was marvellous, all went super smoothly both in the UK and here. They just loaded it on the van in the UK, we flew over, they arrived the next day having driven it here (so had the same English-speaking moving team throughout). They did all the paperwork, including cutting us an insurance deal - all the firms told us we would need 'marine insurance' as the load was going by sea (all 22 miles of it...), to the tune of about 1k and involving super-complicated value estimation forms. Britannia got their corporate insurers to take the teeny-tiny risk on themselves at no extra cost to us, which is the sort of flexibility that got them the job.

But really, just look in your Yellow Pages, call out a few people who have full page ads and international moves mentioned, then pick one you feel good about. The customer service/ amount of care taken is so much down to the individual team on the day/local office anyway, so asking for opinions doesn't help much.

I've used Pickfords 4 times with removals abroad in the last 8 years. I would highly reccomend them.

They are professional and always well priced ( infact the best price on all occasions) . I have never had a problem with damage or missing items. Make sure the quote is without VAT as you don't have to pay this when moving to CH , and ask about part loads as this brings down the costs. Remember there is always a minimum cost for any removals.

I wouldn't bother to use any other firm.
