Just about to rent a room in my flat. What should I be careful about?

Dear friends,

Need your advice..

I am thinking of renting a room in my flat, which is located close to Montreux. What are the key points that I should pay attention to in order to avoid weird surprises?.. And where should I publish it? Do you know of anyone looking for a room?

Any info is more than welcome obviously..

Thanks so much for your help!
Ciao Ciao!

Hi I would have thought that this is a good a place to start as anyway. Not too many weirdos?! Are you looking for same sex flatmate? Also, maybe it would be a good idea to have a friend there when you do initial viewings. Good luck anyway!

Thanks Nicolas!

No weirdo detected on EF until today.. If you know of one, tell me who and I get him/her on my watch list..

My flatmate does not have to be a woman, actually I would even prefer a man. What truly matters is that he/she helps keep the place clean and has a great sense of humour.

Ciao!

ha ha will keep you informed! I am inclined to agree with you re sharing with a man - all my best flatmates from my London flatsharing days were men (and think of all their friends too ...)

Make a contract (google Untermietsvertrag) and get enough people to visit so that you can be picky.

Get references if possible
Have a friend there to do the viewings with and meet the people
A contract of some sort, agree all house rules etc beforehand

Good advice, will do as you say!
Now I have no clue how to publish it, are there websites or newspapers dedicated to flat sharing?

Not sure about over here (was a lettings agent in the UK for a while) although there is a booklet that comes out weekly or monthly. Someone on here will know what its called. It has all rental properties in it.

You can put an advert on the noticeboard at a local Migros and Co-op.
Leave tear off strips with your phone number on for intersted people to take away.
Return to the shop to see how many have been taken and that will give you an indication if there is any interest.
