Opinions on Voltaplatz area in Basel

We are considering a move to one of the newly constructed buildings in Voltaplatz(Volta West), Basel

The apartments are quite nice from inside and brand new and meet all our requirements. We currently stay in kannenfeld area and so Voltawest is not that far---

However, I have been hearing mixed opinions about the area, its look and reputation. I have to agree that it is perhaps not the prettiest area of Basel, but has no longer the run down feel it used to have a couple of years ago. With new Coopo and BKB etc, it actually looks quite nice. It also seems like most apartments are taken over there

I would like to hear from anyone who lives in any of these new buildings or just has an opinion on the area--pros and cos etc. I am sitting on the fence right now and more likely to take it

any opinions would help

Re: Opinions on Voltaplatz area in Basel

While I don't live in the building, I do live up the street at Kannenfeld also and tend to shop that Coop...

I'm pretty happy with the changes in that area since that Coop went in. It is a lot more active, a lot of families walking around, a lot of folks using that tram stop.

They have glassed in the pillars for the overpass (which I'm sure you've noticed if you've been by recently) and the little shops contained within look like they should be opening soon.

I noticed one day that the fountains out between Coop and the tram stop are actually water spouts that "chase" or "play" (like you might find at Disney or Europa Park).

I agree, it certainly looks a lot less dismal than it did 2yrs ago.

Also, I do not know whether you'd consider it good or bad - I think it is a good thing myself - the people I see on the street around there seem to be a good mix of ethnic backgrounds. I hear many different languages being spoken on my short walk to and from that Coop.

Oh! And! Another good thing I think is that the people are generally friendly... I tend to smile and greet folks as I pass them and tend to get friendly responses in return.
