Moving from Switzerland to France? - Help?

Hello all,

We have rented a nice house nr Divonne and will be leaving our apartment in Switzerland to move there in Sept?

What is the procedure for moving our household items over the border re: customs etc?

I realise we can use a quite unmanned crossing and hopefully not get stopped in our rental van.

What views or help do people have on this move?

cheers
chris

The Swiss aren't going to worry too much, your leaving, but the French may be interested....

I've never done it from Switzerland to France okay! But I have moved between countries a lot, including Eu into Switzerland. My guess is the rules are reciprocal. In other words if you're moving your household then you should declare your shipment but there'll be no duty to pay if you've owned the items for at least six months and lived outside the EU for over a year. Don't mess around doing midnight flits across unmanned crossings. You'll just need to fill out a few forms. This link might be helpful:

Re: Moving from Switzerland to France? - Help?

we just did it this week and it was very simple.

Go to French customs office, they will give you a form to fill out and the list of documents you need to present. Nothing complicated, just copy of ID; copy of leaving certificate you got from Switzerland and similar.

You also need to make a list of the items you are moving, but ours was very simple and not very detailed and it was totally sufficient.

On your moving day you will stop your car/van in the designated place at the border. (Check out the opening times first, you don't want to be stuck there while everybody has their lunch break.) Go to Swiss customs, get a stamp that you are leaving. Take the same document and the abovementioned lists and copies to the French customs, get a stamp. No fees. At least in our case they were not even interested in seeing the goods. And that's it.

Don't forget about importing and registering your car (assuming you have one) as well. This turned out very costly for some people I know. It was also a major paperwork hassle with the French authorities as well. Plan on taking at least a day off work to do this. Last I knew, you still had to go to Bourg en Bresse to do this.

You should use a container--it's easier to coordinate if you're moving a bunch of things at once. You can also ship a vehicle (providing it fits) in a container, which is a bonus if that's on your agenda. One thing I'd keep in mind is that prices will vary among moving companies. If you are moving more than just your belongings, contact A-1 Auto Transport--they're a good option even if you just want to get a price without committing to anything.

Re: Moving from Switzerland to France? - Help?

Did anybody move to France from CH? I deregistered at the village in CH, need to register in France now which I will do next week.

Did anybody go through the process of registering their Swiss car in France to get the French license plates and French insurance?

Hi Backtoch -- do you have any helpful hints about moving from CH to France? For example, which movers did you end up using?

I used France Removals recently who were superb - very professional and amazingly zero breakages. Not one thing. Very competitive quotes too.
