Canton of Vaud or Fribourg?

Which canton is more expensive to live in, Vaud or Fribourg? I didn't really think the cost of living would vary very much within a country but since this is Switzerland, I'm not really sure anymore.

We're trying to find a new apartment closer to my partner's new job so preferably around the Estavayer le lac- Yverdon area. However, a friend of ours (who is Swiss) suggested we find an apartment within the Canton of Fribourg because apparently it's cheaper, in terms of health insurance, taxes, etc.

I'm not sure how true this is. Does anyone have an idea?

Your friend is right, some cantons are cheaper than others in terms of insurance, property and taxes. I know Vaud is more expensive than neighbouring Valais. Not sure about Fribourg. Check this site out.

Re: Canton of Vaud or Fribourg?

What you save on one lot of insurance you'll pay somewhere else, although Friborg is probably slightly cheaper overall than Vaud.

Don't forget to factor in travelling time and costs. The tax people allow you to deduct Chf 0.50 per km and in view they are not renown for giving presents, i guess the real cost is somewhere around this with depreciation, petrol, maintainence, tax, insurance costs properly accounted for.

Maybe cheaper paying more and living in a more expensive canton closer to your work.
