Yverdon - Geneva commute

I'm having a hard time finding housing in Geneva so I'm now considering commuting from Yverdon. Anyone else doing this? Any good websites for accomodation in Yverdon?

Re: Yverdon - Geneva commute

Have you ever been to Yverdon, either to visit or just check out the place?

It is nothing like Geneva. The commute, by train, would not be too bad, but I personally could never live in Yverdon. Besides perhaps the baths, there is nothing much there.

Yes, I've been there, I find it to be a nice quite town. Now how do I go about renting an appartment there?

Re: Yverdon - Geneva commute

Is not Yverdon a bit far away to commute, even by train ?

Did you look a little bit more nearby Geneva ?

Or even in France ?

Yes, I would prefer to be closer but Nyon and Morges are also places where it is not easy to find accommodation and Yverdon has an ICN connection to Geneva Airport.

Where in France would you suggest has good public transport links to the airport and is not too difficult to find a place? Is there any major tax disadvantage to living in France?

Why not live in Lausanne? It gets good marks from members here.

Yes, but isn't the accommodation shortage in Lausanne just as bad as in Geneva? I need somewhere I can quickly find a place to live.

Re: Yverdon - Geneva commute

Well rents are better than Lausanne, but yes, the shortage is the same I think. Took us two months to get our place, in the end we used a relocation agency.
There are some temporary options (Vision Lausanne, for example) if you'd rather take some time to find a place you like.
Vision Lausanne aren't bad. We were paying 1500 for the room we were in. they are tiny but nicely done and have everything you might need. They are also located very near the train station (7 minute walk).
The Manager (Jean Jacques) also was brilliant, and said we could use him as a reference when finding a new place to live. He even told the agencies who called that we'd been with him for 'a while' which worked to our advantage.
Anyhow, there are a few options in case you run out of time. Though, these temporary apartments get full fast so that is something to consider.

Re: Yverdon - Geneva commute

The cheapest apartment they have is 1500, but if it is not showing up on the webpage it is likely because they don’t' have any left. They get their bookings for up to a month or even three in advance!!

In any case, it might be worth calling the office and asking if they might have something, won’t hurt to try. When we were there, we had only booked a month but we still had not found anything by the end of the month and someone was moving into the room we had. But JJ was brilliant and really helped us out and with some manoeuvring found another room for us. Just tell him you are really in a bind. Although, the room he did find us was more expensive (the 2000 one) but no matter, we needed something and it was temporary, and in any case 2000 was the upper limit of rent we were willing to go for a place, so it was ok for us.

Re: Yverdon - Geneva commute

Don't know if you're still looking, but have you seen this on the forum ? http://www.englishforum.ch/adverts-p...t-yverdon.html

Otherwise, try to get hold of the local newspaper "La Région Nord Vaudois", especially the free Friday version. That will also give you an idea of what goes on in Yverdon.
I agree with Runningdeer that it's absolutely nothing like Geneva, but I love living here ... have done so for 27 years ! Personally, I wouldn't like that long commute (I drive to Lausanne for work), but you know the time involved, so only you can decide about that.

Appartment prices are so much lower here, and 'though I've not searched myself for many years, I hear of people who have found good bargains, and there is certainly enough building going on to suggest that there are places to be found.

Have you looked on Homegate ? http://www.homegate.ch/louer/apparte...romItem=ctn-vd

Re: Yverdon - Geneva commute

Yverdon is a very pretty little town- by the lake, its own sandy beach, plenty of shops with Neuchatel v. close, Bern and Fribourg close to- and the Jura for sport, hiking, skiiing, just up the road, and said above, a great spa. Also shopping in France very close in Jougne and Pontarlier. And you are quite right, you can get much larger apartments for much less money there - with direct trains to Geneva on a regular basis. Some people prefer to live in rabbit hatches in a large town- others appreciate having more space, great nature all around... each to their own hey. Get the Friday paper as advised above. Enjoy. If you search for Yverdon on the Forum, you'll see that many have settled there for the same reasons as you recently.
