Baby vaccination covered by basic health insurance?

Hello

Could anyone please tell me whether the baby`s inoculation is covered by the basic health plans? My German is basic, so even if I whizzed thru our documents, I would probably not find it anyway.

Any kind advice is thanked by me. So cheers.

Beatrix

Generally, yes, it's organised by your Paediatrician or via the hospital, and the doctor has a 'schedule' of what is recommended, and also one or two vaccinations which are 'optional' - or possibly recommended depending on your child's risk factors...

Do you have a good Paediatrician ? Ours was very fluent in English and very able to give his recommendations and the receptionist/assistant was more than happy to explain the system and help us to fill in the correct paperwork...

You'll still pay a gap most of the time 10% of the costs...if they don't direct-bill your insurance, then you get the doctor's bill, forward it to the health insurance company, and by the time the bill is due you should have the health insurance payment so you only have to add the 'gap' amount and pay the bill in full back to the doctor...

Hope that makes sense...

If I remember well ours were covered by insurance. Some pediatricians actually bill directly your health insurer, you don't even get to see the bill.

(if you are planning Prevenar, talk to your pediatrician to get the latest info, there has been a mess lately concerning this vax as it is on the black list of meds in CH Romandie, as per Hebdo cca 2wks ago).

Thank you. To be honest with you, we do not have a paediatrician yet, we are very new here, just trying to figure out how this whole system works, so different to what we were used to in the UK. Over there I would just take my baby to the GP`s surgery and they would administer the vaccination there and then. Does this mean I do not have to take my son at all to see the GP with this, but need to look for a paediatricain. How does one go round and find one??

Usually, your GP will not want to treat your child since kids go to pediatricians here. If you have a GP, ask him to refer you to a good ped, you can also ask your OB/Gyn for a name of a good ped. If you don't have GP or Ob/Gyn, you can post a question here for somebody to recommend you a ped in your area. You can also call up your closest pediatrical dept in your local hospital, tell them you are new and you need a ped, they will refer you to somebody. You can also look up yellow pages. People in health care mostly speak very good English here.

Re: Baby vacconation covered by basic health insurance?

Here is a directory of peds in canton ZU, have a look. Although, I would really only contact a ped recommended to me by somebody, since we have been unlucky with out previous 2 peds and even though switching to new one was painless, it was still a hustle. So, I would either ask at work, or your partner's work, or, depending on how old your kiddo is, would ask moms in a playgroup, or daycare, or call up maternity ward or ped dept there, since they will also know which ped is willing to take on a new client without some major waiting list or sending you to another one (every commune also has something called I think Mutterberatung, I have no idea what it is in German, but it's a place that advises moms and babies, I am sure they could also give you some info). If you have been moved here through a relocation agency they often also help with questions like these, or your or your partner's HR at work.

Do you have any nice neighbours. Talk to them. There seems to be a big country/town divide - as here in the sticks people are very happy to see a GP (and vice-versa) for most minor/routine things for babies/kids- and a peadiatrician will only be seen for difficult cases on GP advice (a bit like in the UK).

-find a pediatrician (I can recommend Dr. Jörg near Milchbuck, above the Il Postino Pizzeria)

-Babies/Children follow a schedule of checkups, called U1 till U something, vaccinations are part of these U's (U stands for Untersuchung). Though it's not obligatory to show up, you will get calls from the Jugendfürsorge if you don't go there.

-Medication/Vaccination for Children is free/fully refunded by the insurance

Re: Baby vacconation covered by basic health insurance?

Thanks everyone for your kind comments. The truth of the matter is, I have only been here for a couple of weeks, really do not know how the health system works yet. In our block we seem to have childless couples or single people, so no luck there. I will, however ask my husband to ask his colleagues as he mentioned they had kids. My little one is 11 months old, received his first two lots of vaccinations in the UK. So here is the big task now to find a paeditrician, will definitely check out the one that was recommended to me. Thank you once again, you are a nice bunch
