Re: Do you need Swiss health insurance if.......

As recently as August 2011 I was on a Swiss contact with my company and I was allowed to opt out of the medical insurance. I changed to a German contract and now I am back on a Swiss contract. This time though they are deducting the medical costs from my salary and have asked me to fill in the forms for Swiss health cover.
I reside in the UK and have my UK NHS cover. I pay my taxes and national insurance in the UK. Due to the nature of my work I don't even visit Switzerland. Do you believe that I should be paying for Swiss medical cover too?

Re: Do you need Swiss health insurance if.......

You should read this and see if you are exempt, note the relevant paragraph, then show your employer the French version,

http://www.bag.admin.ch/themen/krank...x.html?lang=en ........ English

http://www.bag.admin.ch/themen/krank...x.html?lang=fr ......... French

In Geneva many employees are French citizens and think they know the Swiss laws....

Re: Do you need Swiss health insurance if.......

It is possible to keep your foreign insurance in Switzerland as long as it is officially ok'ed by your commune/population office.
You need to talk to them about it, show them copies of your policies etc. and if they're ok, they'll give you an official exemption form which will have an end date on it.
At the end of the exemption, you need to go back to your commune and they may prolong it for you or they may ask you to take out Swiss insurance.

Even if your foreign insurance covers Switzerland, it may not necessarily be accepted by your local commune as a proper alternative.

Clear as mud?!

This is how what I wrote on my FAQ :

I have health cover from my home country and they've told me they'll cover Switzerland. Can I use this instead?

Maybe. There is no clear cut answer on this. The only thing you can do is to ask at your population office who may ask to see details of what your policy covers. It can be quite a drawn-out bureaucratic process but it does work for some people. If your local authorities do accept your foreign insurance, they will give you an official exemption form. Please note that you have to have the official exemption form. Having a foreign alternative insurance may or may not be ok.
