Pregnant without Insurance Coverage or a Permit

What a great pick up line...

I'm in serious hot water. I'm a non EU national. I've been living in Geneva and was working at the UN for over 10 years. I lost my job in May of 2010, haven't had any luck finding a new one- so have been living here without a Carte de Legitimation or a permit. (although I have been out of the country quite a lot, I still have an apartment here). My UN health insurance ran out at the end of 2010.

My boyfriend of 3+ years, is an EU national with a Permis C and lives and works in Geneva. Although we don't live together, I have recently found out that I'm pregnant. I have house insurance, year long travel insurance and a basic health insurance, but it's a non-Swiss based expatriate insurance that doesn't cover pregnancy.

If my boyfriend and I get married (which is a whole other can of worms in itself), might his insurance, which is CSS cover my pregnancy costs? Or am I doomed to wait this out back home? I really want to have the baby here but can't afford the maternity costs at the moment.

Crazy stuff, I know....but any advice would be greatly appreciated. I wish I could just be happy about the fact that I'm going to be a Mom rather than constantly worrying about money, mountains of paperwork and endless red-tape.

Thanks

Re: Pregnant without Insurance Coverage or a Permit

if you are not legally living in switzerland im afraid new law says you cannot get married, however regarding the pregnancy you can get in touch with the sans papier office near you and they will help you with the tramit for getting insurance.

found the link for you. http://www.sans-papiers.ch/site/index.php?id=122

Dont worry, all will be fine. The first consultation is free and if needed the next ones have a very low cost.

And last but for sure not least Congratulations!!

Oh dear...

And congrats to the baby.

Any health insurance has to accept you even if you are here without permit.

Bests,

Re: Pregnant without Insurance Coverage or a Permit

Hi and thank you for your advice and for the message. I posted this question as I am absolutely stuck and now need a solution to this complicated situation. I would, of course, prefer that everything would be above board but I keep getting stonewalled.

Prior to the pregnancy I just assumed (never assume!) that I would eventually find another job at the UN and all my problems would be solved. As the days go by, my chances of finding another UN job are decreasing rapidly.

I've exhausted all possibilities known to me and I will approach the insurance co. to see if they will take me on board. If not, it looks like it's off to the convent for me!

Thanks again

It doesnt give a "No" they MUST take you. If you speak german or french call the insurance (you can even choose which one) and they must take you, no questions asked regarding your legal situation. But best will be trough the office of sans papier where you can also be informed widely about what do do, where to go, etc. What i think you have as priority now is to cover your pregnancy and that is granted by law. Once you have the baby, what will be the next step, how to get married, etc. The sans papier office can advise you much better.
