Can I go to any doctor in any canton with basic health insurance ?

I know that for hospital stays, the basic health insurance rules are clearly saying that only Wohnkanton is allowed (and for example Helsana offers a supplementary insurance that allows you to go to any hospital in the country).

But what about doctors ? I couldn't find any "supplementary" option that allowed free doctor choice.

I believe for standard medicine (Grundversicherung KVG) you can visit any Doctor. But why not ask your insurance company?

It depends on what kind of basic health insurance you have closed. If you have chosen Hausarztmodell or managed care (in order to save money) and have filled the name of your GP on the form, you are obliged to go to him every time you need a doctor except in case of emergency or attending a gynaecologist or opthalmologist. If you have a normal basic health insurance without limitation you are allowed free doctor choice in all of Switzerland.

There are so many types of Insurances, and so many types of 'basic' Insurance. Check with your Insurer, it's the only way to be sure.

With ours, we could only use a Doctor in another C/Kanton if there isn't a suitable specialist in ours, and only via our GP.
