Another example
I had a colleague who helped a friend of his move apartment; at no charge of course.
He dropped a crate of breakables and the friend (now ex-friend? ) sued him for the damage.
I thought we were in Switzerland....not America!

Re: Am I the only one with no Hausrat Versicherung?

I have 90k home contents insurance and private liability insurance for 5 million for 380chf per year through Allianz. When I move out I'll be claiming around 10k already- loss of a key, locks must be changed (although the key was lost in the desert with no address attached) plus accidental wall markings and damage requiring a repaint and some other sundry items. Stuff in Switzerland is so expensive, if I broke my washing machine or cooker or something the cost of a new one with installation could be exorbitant.

We are. If your friend has the correct insurances then why not sue him? You're really suing his insurance companies.

So that would be anywhere outside of central Zurich...

The Swiss are just as litigious as USAers, just not in the same ambulance-chasing-way, more a refined, wham-bam-here-you-go way...

That's great, I'm happy for you. It is about risk management and what you are willing to bear. Those were just off the shelf examples. What if you left the tap running or a pipe broke and the blame was apportioned to you, ruining the apartment(s) below... still want to bear those costs?

I've got only Haftpflichtversicherung ( civil / private liability insurance ). Good enough for me.
Me too. Having a toddler at home makes it a must as they love to break and crash things, everywhere.

I don't care much about my stuff, have neither jewelry nor pieces of art at home, only cheap ikea furniture, books and a 300CH Linux desktop PC.

Hmm, interesting...you wouldn't mind if I'd sue you in let's say 2 weeks or so?

Likewise - I have pets and guests over ( visiting members of the National Society of Black Engineers for example ) hence it is more important to have the liability insurance.

I think you're odd, yes.
Home contents insurance isn't really that expensive and it's worthwhile if it covers theft of items away from home. I've successfully claimed for 2 stolen bikes, one from work, the other from the garage.
But how much have you payed in?

The insurance wouldn't be doing this if they weren't making money on it.

That's my take anyway.

You're telling us you've insured your IKEA furniture? You know, the stuff you can get for free on the EF?

For home contents paying 200CHF per year to insurance 30k worth of stuff seems like a bargain to me.

150 years before you pay 30k to the insurance company.

You're absolutely right. But I can afford the premiums, and I wouldn't be able to afford the repairs/replacement of our house and its content if it burned down/all needed replacing.

As an aside, people might like to know that structural repair to buildings caused by flood (rain, not river), fire or earthquake (the latter is an "I think") is usually covered by kanton insurance...

I was intrigued by this. It actually exists? Is the membership exclusive only to Black Enginners? In which case, can this not be seen as racist?
Probably deserves a different thread, to not hijack LiB's (though he probably deserves it).

Re: Am I the only one with no Hausrat Versicherung?

My husband sat on a friend's pair of glasses, replacement costs were covered by Privathaftpflicht

I fell asleep with a candle burning in the living room, curtains and carpet caught fire (so did I, almost) - Hausrat-Versicherung paid for burned private possessions, Haftpflicht paid for redoing the room

Sh*t happens

Yes, but LiB doesn't have glasses or know any friends with them, and he doesn't have a curtains or use candles (we've already established he doesn't have a carpet).

Here's a photo of one of the rooms in his flat that I took when I last visited:

Re: Am I the only one with no Hausrat Versicherung?

lets step back and try to build a picture of Mr. LiB
.
doesn't believe in Christmas, or associated trappings
doesn't believe in Valentines Day, or associated trappings
in fact doesn't believe in any of the social norms of card-gift giving.
doesn't believe in paying train fares and has been known to duck into the toilets to avoid detection
now doesn't buy home insurance or accident cover?

what are you one of them commie pinko types?
