| | Can I use my Health Insurance from Ireland?
I took out health and travel insurance before coming to Switzerland, a student backpackers insurance that will do me till the time I leave Switzerland, will I still have to take out health insurance over here, or will this insurance do?
I'm really hoping it will, I paid €300 for my insurance and don't fancy forking out a whole lot more for more health insurance each month!!
Thanks, any advice would be great!!

How long will you be staying here? Will you be doing what your Insurance covers you for, eg backpacking- and is Switzerland included in your policy?
Do you now intend to work here (NOT backpacking)? Your question is far too vague for anybody to help you- so please clarify the situation.

It depends... see above post, and other things can make it possible to use your current health insurance also.
We have foreign health insurance and have been here for over 2 years, but my husband's employer is based in the UK, so although we pay tax here, we pay National Insurance in the UK as it's a temporary contract and we will be going back to live there at the end of 3 years. We have to provide a letter which comes from his employer to the Health Insurance Direktion to confirm that if our bills are not paid by us/our insurance, they will cover the costs. We also have proof from the PAYE dept in UK that National Insurance is paid there. If either of us were to get a job here, it would all change and we would then need to have health insurance from a Swiss company. £300 is a small amount in comparison to what people here are paying for health insurance, so be sure to check your policy that you're definitely covered here... medical bills are a pricey thing and you will usually have to pay the bills yourself & then get re-imbursement if you're not with a Swiss company, so be prepared!

If you intend to stay here and get a permanent job, your irish insurance is valid for 3 months while living here, then you need swiss insurance. If you really do just come to backpack, then as far as im aware, your irish insurance will cover it. How much backpacking can one do in Switzerland? Do you intend to stay long?

Holiday insurance is cheap as it rarely has to pay much in medical expenses, they just fly you home ASAP , once your home they don't pay anymore .

If it's a holiday and you're traveling then as long as your travel policy covers it you're fine, you are simply a tourist. If you intend to get a permit and work you are not covered! Get an EHIC card too, very useful!
As says above almost correctly, if you come here to work then you are OK for 3 months only in the effect this is the time for you to sort your cover out. If not the government assign you a policy, this is generally backdated to the date you came in so be careful of this you could, like others on here, get a nasty surprise with your first premium being for 4 months!!! If you know you are coming for more than 90 days and as a worker it is best to get this dealt with within the first few days of being here.

Not if you have registered here, once you are registered for 3 months.
Unless you are on an inter-company transfer and still paying Irish PRSI.
Regarding sums, be prepared to be pay 300 SFR a month for insurance here.
Accident and liability insurance are separate. Do you have those arranged from Ireland too?

VHI had (has) a Global insurance policy that was (is) acceptable in CH as medical insurance as long as you are planning to return to IRL. It's a while since I looked into it so may have changed in the meantime.

I was using VHI global while on my 3month student visa(Renewed every 3 months for another 3 months for 18 months). Had to send them a form with stamp and signatures from VHI saying they covered stuff (slight hassle getting VHI to sign it). As soon as I got my 5 year working permit I had to switch over to a swiss insurer asap.
I pay 163chf a month at 28 for the very cheapest options I could find (still technically a student you see )

VHI Global is still acceptable at least for me in BS for the duration of my permit i.e till end 2012. Not sure what will happen when I get C permit.
