Insurance required upon immigration?
Hello,
I am an American immigrating to Switzerland for a year under the Stagiaire-Abkommen as an Language assistant. I'll be in Zurich. I am going to get my Visa stamped at the Swiss Consulate-General in Munich, and I was told that it is sometimes necessary to show proof of insurance there at the consulate. In any case, it will be required that I register within a few days of being in the country, at which point proof of insurance will certainly be required.
My stay being temporary in nature (only a year) and its purpose being Weiterbildung, I have been told by the secretary of the Gymnasium where I will be teaching that I may possibly forgo purchasing Swiss insurance if I fill out a form, which I may or may not choose to do. In the meantime, I have found a good plan to sustain me temporarily, an American company, HTH Worldwide, while I consider whether or not to purchase Swiss health insurance for the year. Unfortunately, it will take about three weeks for the prescreening to go through before the insurance will go into effect, I am hoping to be settled in in Zurich within the first week of August. Therefore I had the idea to get temporary travel insurance or something like that from the same provider to cover me while I wait. My own insurance as a student runs out on the 31st.
Here I finally come to the thrust of my question: would it suffice to show the receipts for this travel insurance to the consulate and/or the police in the process of my immigration, or would that not be looked upon so kindly? Any experience or expertise on the matter would be gladly received.
Best,
Lawrence
